The Las Vegas Raiders made the smart decision in getting Malcolm Koonce back on the team. Coming off of his best season in 2023, he tore his ACL before 2024 even started. And, the Raiders think he can get back to complete form.
However, there is a risk involved, which is why they gave him the one-year deal worth $12 million. If he returns back to form, they can simply re-sign him next year on a long-term deal, or someone else will pay him a ton of money. If he doesn't return, they can sign him back on another smaller deal, or let him walk.
So, no matter what happens, they will need a backup plan, and they also need depth for this season. So, it's safe to assume that they will draft at least one edge rusher in the 2025 NFL Draft. Which round and pick that happens is the big question. But, maybe, based on what we know, they are targeting one on Day 2.
I mean, they are visiting with a guy who will be there in the second or maybe even third round.
Raiders to visit with EDGE Josaiah Stewart
According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Raiders are hosting Josaiah Stewart on a pre-draft visit. The former Michigan edge rusher was part of the best defensive line in the country last year, as he set the tone on the edge.
Obviously this is a guy that Tom Brady and John Spytek have some interest in, and they've probably seen quite a bit of him as he plays for two of their alma mater. This is a pre-draft visit that, yes, the Raiders should have regardless of where he went to school, but those two certainly have their fingerprints all over it.
Stewart has some huge potential, maybe some of the best in the draft at his position. And, his numbers back it up despite being on a stacked and loaded defensive line. Stewart finished with a 91 overall PFF grade and nine sacks on the year. His play in the run game is what makes him fall a bit. He's not terrible, and he has effort, so the potential is there.
This would be a great signing, and easily help them climb the AFC West against emerging teams like the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers.
