This Seahawks starter may have just lost his job before camp even begins

Might need another chance yet again.

Seahawks make rare deal to sign Nick Emmanwori for camp | HeraldNet.com

The 2025 NFL draft lined up well for the Seattle Seahawks. This was mostly due to the team trading quarterback Geno Smith and wide receiver DK Metcalf this offseason, adding a third-rounder and second-rounder, respectively, from those moves. The Metcalf trade might pay dividends for years.

But safety Coby Bryant might not be a huge fan of what happened. Seattle was able to turn the number 52 selection, which was added in the Metcalf deal, into number 35 via a trade with the Tennessee Titans. With that selection, Seattle took safety Nick Emmanwori.

The South Carolina product has great size at 6'3" and 220 pounds, but he also has elite speed and athleticism. He is going to start sooner rather than later, and in OTAs and minicamp, the rookie was impressing the coaching staff with his adaptability and high football IQ. Emmanwori even earned some reps with the edge rusher group.

With Nick Emmanwori signed, Seattle Seahawks safety Coby Bryant might be nervous

Bryant, though, might feel slightly nervous about his standing with the team. After struggling to show he deserved a chance to play a lot through two and a half seasons, Bryant became a starter after veteran Rayshawn Jenkins was injured. Bryant was so good in the second half of last season that Jenkins was not able to get his starting job back.

Bryant is currently penciled in to start next to Julian Love to begin 2025, but that might not last that long.

Nick Emmanwori signed his rookie deal last week, so he will be full-go when training camp begins on July 23. Rookies have already reported to camp, so Emmanwori is probably already proving to the coaches the strides he has made between minicamp in June and July's training camp.

Head coach Mike Macdonald said in June that he was getting used to seeing Emmanwori in his office and asking questions. That probably hasn't changed this week.

The good part for Bryant is that Macdonald likes to use three safeties on the field a lot of the time. Emmanwori, Love, and he might make for an active and productive trio for the Seahawks. But Bryant is also entering the final year of his deal, so if Seattle is thinking their long-term duo will be Love and Emmanwori, Bryant could once again be in a fight for playing time.

Bryant also needs to replicate early in training camp how successful he was at the end of 2024. Nick Emmanwori is already impressing, and Coby Bryant might need to do even more to keep his starting job with the Seattle Seahawks this coming season.
