This question changed everything for Alabama QB Ty Simpson: ‘I’m a Christian first’

Ty Simpson hit a low after a spring scrimmage his sophomore year.

“I just started crying,” Simpson said. “I was just like, man what is going on? I just don’t feel like, it’s not fun to me anymore.”

Then his dad Jason Simpson asked a simple question that changed everything for Simpson.

How’s your faith doing?

The UT Martin football coach asked his son what he was doing to make sure he was trusting in the Lord.

“I had to sit back and I was like man you’re right,” Simpson said. “I’m more worried about how people perceive me in football than they do how I walk in my faith or how I am as a person.”

One night, Simpson decided to change his approach. He didn’t want to keep going down the path of worrying and being anxious.

“I’m like I’m going to pray,” Simpson said. “I’m going to give everything I’ve got to the Lord and make sure I understand that I’m just going to be the best player, the best Ty Simpson I can be.”

That’s what he’s tried to do ever since. It has put him on a path to growth, which has now landed him in the starting quarterback job for Alabama in 2025. Simpson went from a guy who lost a quarterback competition to the starter two years later.

And his faith sits at the center of it all.

“Football means a lot to me, don’t get me wrong,” Simpson said. “I’m going to make sure I do everything because He’s given me this platform and He’s given me this opportunity. But no matter how many touchdowns I throw, no matter how many wins I have at the University of Alabama, I’m a Christian first.”
