The Chicago Bears have invested considerable time and energy in the offense since hiring head coach Ben Johnson. But one position remains questionable.
The 2025 Chicago Bears are looking for a winning season. They are looking for consistency and someone to help lead them to a Super Bowl. Off the field, they likely have someone in new head coach Ben Johnson who should be able to turn the ship around. But does he have all the right pieces to move in the right direction?
The offensive side of the ball is stacked with talent. The defense might need some work, but they will get there eventually. While the offense appears loaded, there is one area, in particular, that has a huge question mark surrounding it.
What area is that?
Why? Williams, despite having one year in the NFL, has still not achieved the kind of success that many hoped he would when he entered the league. Now, there were a few problems he had to endure in 2024 that he shouldn’t have to worry about in 2025. The offensive line will be better; the receiving group will be awesome. The running backs are still a little sketchy, but overall, the team around Williams has improved.
But has Williams?
That is the biggest question heading into the new season. Has Williams improved enough to utilize and take advantage of the weapons and tools given to him? Or will he fall flat on his face?
The Bears’ biggest hope is Williams, hands down. He must be what the Bears expected him to be when they drafted him number one overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. He must be the savior of the franchise. Yes, he must be the team’s best player, and yes, he must show up at critical moments. But can he?
There have been question marks surrounding Williams since he came into the league. Some thought he wasn’t worthy of the first overall pick. Then, when Washington Redskins quarterback Jayden Daniels had the type of season he had people felt that Williams wasn’t going to be anywhere close to good. They certainly didn’t feel he was the best quarterback in that draft class. With his struggles, some of it wasn’t his fault, while other facets of his game were indeed his problem.
It’s possible, under the guidance of Johnson, Williams could be a brand-new player this season and play like a number-one draft pick should play. But there will always be some bumps along the way. Williams has some growing to do, and the offense might struggle a little bit to start, but they have a lot of promise. He’s easily the biggest X-factor this season, and the team will lose and win on his arm.
The whole mess with Williams and his father saying that Williams was trying to find every way possible not to go to the Bears is hanging over the team a little. We all know that the Bears have had struggles with quarterbacks in the past. Mitchell Trubisky, Justin Fields, and even Jay Cutler all had problems. But Williams is a bit different and should be able to pick it up and keep moving forward.
Hopefully, he can break the Bears quarterback curse.
The prognosis for the Bears is good if their biggest question mark can get his act together. The offense is at least twice as good as it was last year, with all the improvements they had over the past offseason. Guard Joe Thuney will be a huge addition to the team, and the Bears will get plenty of mileage out of him. That’s just one of many improvements the Bears have made on offense this offseason.
It all hinges on how well Williams does. Along with the play of the offensive line, he is the biggest thing controlling the destiny of the Bears on offense. If he cannot step up and play well, the team will fall flat on its face. Things will look like they have in the past few seasons. If he can live up to his potential and top billing, Williams and the Bears offense will thrive and win a lot of games.
