Mel, the new lead of The Golden Bachelor, has been open about what he's looking for in a romance throughout the lead up to The Golden Bachelor season 2. While he's entitled to want what he wants out of a romantic relationship, Mel's demands have become a major issue for Bachelor Nation as the show gets ready to film.
After Mel shared that he's looking for one specific age group of women on The Golden Bachelor season 2, I had to step back. I, for one, can't stand by while Mel is openly demeaning to women of a certain age, especially when he's in his 60s and angling to be on a dating show for people in their golden years.
Although The Golden Bachelor has yet to confirm anything about what's happening with Mel, if anything, long-time spoiler account Reality Steve has shared that he's likely to be recast. After sharing some tough comments about what he's looking for in a partner, Mel is likely to be ousted as The Golden Bachelor. If this is the case, I'm back in on the season.
Mel's comments on In The Trenches, a University Of Michigan sanctioned podcast surrounding the school's football program, centered around the criteria he was looking for in a partner. Sharing that he told Bachelor producers he wanted women ranging from 45 to 60 years old, despite being 66 years old himself. Mel shared he told the producer "if they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them," and ignored pushback.
While Mel is welcome to date whoever he wants outside of The Bachelor franchise, The Golden Bachelor wasn't the right platform for his commentary on not wanting to date women his own age. Instead of accepting his age and owning the fact that women in the same phase of life could be a good fit, Mel demanded a disheartening cast.
Though it's possible Bachelor producers were simply going to follow along with his lead, Mel speaking publicly about his desires may have saved The Golden Bachelor season 2. If Reality Steve is correct and Bachelor producers are removing Mel, it may be a sign of things improving for the franchise. I'd be happy to watch The Golden Bachelor season 2 with a new lead.
