The Only Way I'm Watching The Golden Bachelor Season 2 Is If This Rumor Is True

Although I don't typically take such staunch stances about reality TV, I'm officially out on The Golden Bachelor season 2 unless the rumors swirling around the show are true. Throughout The Golden Bachelor years thus far, I've enjoyed the fresh take on the long-time show. Mel Owens, however, has made it tough for me to look forward to The Golden Bachelor season 2.

Mel, the new lead of The Golden Bachelor, has been open about what he's looking for in a romance throughout the lead up to The Golden Bachelor season 2. While he's entitled to want what he wants out of a romantic relationship, Mel's demands have become a major issue for Bachelor Nation as the show gets ready to film.

After Mel shared that he's looking for one specific age group of women on The Golden Bachelor season 2, I had to step back. I, for one, can't stand by while Mel is openly demeaning to women of a certain age, especially when he's in his 60s and angling to be on a dating show for people in their golden years.

Golden Bachelor Mel Owens Is Rumored To Be Out

Reality Steve Says He's Being Recast

Although The Golden Bachelor has yet to confirm anything about what's happening with Mel, if anything, long-time spoiler account Reality Steve has shared that he's likely to be recast. After sharing some tough comments about what he's looking for in a partner, Mel is likely to be ousted as The Golden Bachelor. If this is the case, I'm back in on the season.

While I understand that Mel's comments could be explained away or could've been shared in a way that didn't give full context, the fact that he was willing to share something so derogatory was tough to hear. Mel's decision to be upfront about looking for a younger woman was demeaning, and it went against the whole premise of The Golden Bachelor.

Mel's Comments About Not Dating Out Of An Age Range Were Disgusting

He Shared He'd Only Date Younger

Mel's comments on In The Trenches, a University Of Michigan sanctioned podcast surrounding the school's football program, centered around the criteria he was looking for in a partner. Sharing that he told Bachelor producers he wanted women ranging from 45 to 60 years old, despite being 66 years old himself. Mel shared he told the producer "if they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them," and ignored pushback.

While Mel is welcome to date whoever he wants outside of The Bachelor franchise, The Golden Bachelor wasn't the right platform for his commentary on not wanting to date women his own age. Instead of accepting his age and owning the fact that women in the same phase of life could be a good fit, Mel demanded a disheartening cast.

Bachelor Producers Have One Chance To Prove They're Genuinely Making Changes

They Have All Eyes On Their Next Decision

Moving forward, Mel being removed from the show is the only way I can imagine supporting the season. Although I'm sure The Bachelor camp isn't happy about Mel's commentary, the fact that it was only addressed when he came out and said it publicly is a bit of a red flag. Mel being so openly ageist is a tough pill to swallow.

Though it's possible Bachelor producers were simply going to follow along with his lead, Mel speaking publicly about his desires may have saved The Golden Bachelor season 2. If Reality Steve is correct and Bachelor producers are removing Mel, it may be a sign of things improving for the franchise. I'd be happy to watch The Golden Bachelor season 2 with a new lead.
