The Golden Bachelorette runner-up Guy Gansert ended up with a broken heart after his “slow burn” romance with Joan Vassos. Joan and Guy had an undeniable connection, but he was no match for Chock Chapple. Chock had been a front-runner since early in the competition, even returning to the mansion after the death of his mother. Guy had hope for a future with Joan after their romantic dates in Malibu, Lake Tahoe, and Tahiti. But to Guy’s disappointment, Joan chose Chock in the finale.
Guy, 66, is an emergency room physician from Reno, Nevada. He has four adult children with his ex-wife, to whom he was married for 34 years. Guy’s mellow persona on The Golden Bachelorette season 1 was called into question when it was revealed his wife had filed a restraining order against him during their 2021 divorce. Despite Guy’s public apology, the bombshell tarnished his nice-guy image. Now that Guy is left with a broken heart and a shattered reputation, he may be fixating on the future he could have had with Joan.
Guy had high hopes early in The Golden Bachelorette finale. Joan’s children arrived in Tahiti to meet the two finalists. Guy was excited to meet Joan’s family and enjoy their final date together. Unfortunately, Chock beat Guy to the punch. After Chock met Joan’s children and presented her with plans to buy a home together in New York City, Joan knew her heart belonged to Chock.
Guy was happily preparing for his day when Joan showed up unexpectedly and broke the news to him. Guy was crushed. He sobbed in Joan’s arms and tearfully confessed that he had planned to propose. Guy was very invested in his relationship with Joan, and his emotions were raw as it was all ripped away from him.
In his interview, Guy talked about how confident he had been earlier that day. He was secure in his feelings for Joan, and he hoped she felt the same way. Guy and Joan’s romantic date in Tahiti had given him a false sense of security. Joan felt strongly about Guy, but it was eclipsed by her feelings for Chock.
Joan felt strongly about Guy, but it was eclipsed by her feelings for Chock.
Joan admitted that time was the deciding factor. Her romance with Guy had been slow and steady, whereas she and Chock were moving at a faster pace. Guy had put his heart into his pursuit of Joan. Making it so far in the competition got his hopes up, and he was left devastated.

Guy hasn’t been shy about displaying his short-lived relationship with Joan on social media. He shared behind-the-scenes photos that grew increasingly more romantic as the finale neared. On October 14, Guy shared a series of photos that included five shots of him kissing Joan. On November 12, the day before the finale aired, Guy posted photos of him and Joan in Tahiti.
The carousel included multiple photos of the couple kissing in the ocean, as well as taking a walk on the beach. Guy’s posts show that he has no ill will toward Joan. But the intimate nature of his posts seems odd considering he knows she's now in a relationship with Chock.
It suggests Guy may be struggling to move on. The Golden Bachelorette allowed Guy to discover he was capable of finding love again after his painful divorce. Joan symbolized his healing and a new beginning. After genuinely believing they had a future together, it’s understandable that Guy is having trouble letting go.
