The Bachelorette Production Team Owes Jenn Tran An Apology (They Set Her Up To Fail)

The Bachelorette season 21 was meant to be a celebration of Jenn Tran’s journey to find love, but after producers set her up to fail at every turn, they should be apologizing to their first Asian American lead. After appearing on The Bachelor season 28 with Joey Graziadei, Jenn was one of the few standouts who Bachelor Nation was hopeful would be considered for the role of Bachelorette. Though there aren’t usual standards about who can and can’t become the lead of the next season, Jenn fits what Bachelor Nation looks for as a smart, funny woman looking for love.

As the first Asian American Bachelorette, Jenn’s season was expected to be a milestone event for the series. Putting a woman of Asian heritage in the driver’s seat meant that The Bachelorette season 21 had some expectations, but viewers were confident that the series could successfully ensure that Jenn’s journey was the right fit for her. Hopeful to see more discussion surrounding Jenn’s culture, family history, and expectations from her relationship, Bachelor Nation was ready when the season finally came around. Unfortunately, aside from some precursory conversations about Jenn’s background, things haven’t lived up to the low expectation, failing formidably.

Jenn Wasn’t The First Choice For The Bachelorette

She Took The Role After It Was Given Up

Although Jenn was one of the front-runners for The Bachelorette prior to the decision being made about the role, many were convinced that it would go to Joey’s runner-up, Daisy Kent, or Maria Georgas, who was eliminated during Joey’s hometown dates. Jenn, who had been eliminated the week directly before hometowns, was a great choice, but many felt that Maria or Daisy exuded more of the typical Bachelorette vibe. When Jenn was announced as the lead, many were shocked. Eventually, Bachelor Nation went on to discover that Maria had actually been offered the role first, but had shockingly rejected it.

People Aren’t Interested In The Journey

Though she wasn’t the first choice, Bachelor Nation got behind Jenn to rally for support during her time as The Bachelorette. Unfortunately, things haven’t been going well on Jenn’s season of The Bachelorette from an entertainment standpoint. Jenn herself has been doing a great job as the lead of the season, but the cast of men who have been fighting for her affection is hurting the series as a whole. While some of the men are genuinely looking to connect with Jenn, others like villain Sam McKinney joined the season for the wrong reasons, hopeful for fame or other connections.

The Bachelorette Set Jenn Up To Fail

They Didn’t Set Her Up With The Right Tools

Jenn’s season was meant to be monumental, giving the lead to a woman who could inspire others and tap into a different background for future Bachelor and Bachelorette casting. By sharing her story with the world, Jenn was hopeful to bring The Bachelorette into a new era, but rather than giving her the tools to create a love story that would be captivating for viewers, Jenn was set up to fail. With a cast of men who lack appropriate diversity, a lack of introspection into why Jenn’s heritage is important, and an influx of villains, The Bachelorette has failed Jenn.
