The Bachelor: Jonathon Johnson's Recent Comment About Grant Ellis Proves Producers Picked The Right Lead (Is He Jealous Of Grant?)

Former The Bachelorette contestant, Jonathan Johnson, shared some unflattering comments about The Bachelor’s casting, which may prove that Grant Ellis was the ideal lead. Jonathan was one of 25 men vying for the leading lady’s heart. He and Jenn Tran shared a formidable connection, but he was ultimately eliminated in week 8 of the competition. As a fan favorite, many were hoping to see Jonathon return as the lead of The Bachelor season 29. When Grant was announced, immediately after his elimination in week 6, many looked to Jonathon for commentary.

The Bachelor: Jonathon Johnson's Recent Comment About Grant Ellis Proves Producers Picked The Right Lead (Is He Jealous Of Grant?)

Although Jonathon was disappointed by the rejection from Jenn and the franchise, his time with The Bachelor is not over. The creative director was invited back to star in Bachelor In Paradise season 10. This franchise spin-off will allow Jonathon to resume his search for love in a tropical location. However, Jonathan has been vocal about his frustrations with the franchise’s casting process. His open condemnation of the show may indicate that the producer’s choice to bring back Grant may have been best for the franchise.

Jonathon Revealed He Wasn't Asked To Be The Bachelor

Jonathon Was Never Offered The Position

In an interview with Joe Vulpis on the Lightweights podcast, Jonathan spilled about his dissatisfaction with The Bachelor’s casting. When the host inquired about any potential Bachelor lead offers, Jonathan responded, "No. Not a mention, not an ask, not a 'Hey, we'd love to just like sit you down for a conversation.' Not once." His frustration is evident. As a recognizable name in the franchise and the third runner-up, Jonathan seemed like an obvious choice. The producer’s lack of communication is understandably disappointing. However, it seemed Grant’s lead role was planned long before Jonathon's elimination.

Grant Ellis was the first of the franchise to be announced as a lead immediately after his elimination.

The producer’s choice to announce Grant early paid off for the franchise. By informing viewers who the next season will feature, they fixed a huge mistake in The Bachelor's casting process. Previously, leads were announced after the competitors had undergone the casting process. This led to unnecessary drama and wasted positions on set.

This issue was emphasized in Jenn's season of The Bachelorette. One contestant, Sam McKinney, had applied for the show expecting previous contestants Daisy Kent or Maria Georgas to be selected. He was surprised and underwhelmed when he climbed out of the limo and saw Jenn. Sam’s shockingly transparent quote, “This girl is not my type. I thought the Bachelorette was gonna be Daisy or Maria," sparked criticism but highlighted a running issue.

Whether Grant was selected because of his earlier elimination, allowing more time for applications, or his easygoing personality is unclear. One thing is certain: Jonathan’s comments on the casting franchise do not bode well for his potential as a lead. Grant's charisma, authenticity, and good looks made him an obvious choice for the lead position. With Grant's adoring contestants and fans flocking in, producers are undoubtedly happy with their decision.

Jonathon Doesn't Understand Why Grant Is The Lead

On the podcast, Vulpis asked if Jonathon knew why Grant was chosen instead, and Jonathan joked, "I have no idea. But I always make the joke it's 'cause he's over 6 foot, and I'm 5'11." While Jonathon doesn’t take himself too seriously, the comment seems to harbor a tinge of jealousy. Most know the best jokes are the ones with some truth behind them, as summarized by writer, Shelby Van Pelt:

"Humans are the only species who subvert truth for their own entertainment. They call them jokes."

It’s worth noting that Jonathon has remained a fan favorite for his sense of humor. He iconically entered the competition on a stretcher, wearing a hospital gown, with his head wrapped in bandages. His comment was not intended to upset audiences, but it did leave some fans wondering if the show prioritizes the physical marketability of its leads. His comment could have hurt the franchise’s reputation. Grant has not yet said anything to criticize the show.

Producers Made The Right Choice Picking Grant

Should Jonathon Be Invited Back?

Jonathon is undoubtedly a fantastic contestant who would have made a great lead. There is still a chance that he will be invited back as a lead. The show has reused contestants in consecutive seasons before. However, the producers choice to invite Grant back may have been the most profitable.

Grant is an authentic personality who genuinely wants to find love. He constantly reminds contestants and fans alike he is in it for the long run. He wants to find a wife and start a family. In a video posted to Grant’s Instagram account, he states, “I just want to raise my family, and feel that love.” His romantic journey and good intentions will attract countless viewers.

Although Jonathon would have, and still could, make a fantastic lead, Grant was the most obvious choice. His season of The Bachelor will prove highly successful for the franchise. Hopefully, fans will see Jonathon leading a season shortly. The funny and down-to-earth personality deserves the opportunity as much as Grant.
