Houston Texans cornerback Kris Boyd had a recent viral sideline incident during their 23-14 NFL divisional round loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans later clarified his stance on this issue, addressing the controversy head-on.

Boyd set the tone early when he chased down Kansas City returner Nikko Remigio on the opening kickoff. He forced a fumble in dramatic fashion, but the Chiefs recovered the loose ball.
This triggered Boyd's adrenaline-fueled reaction. He ripped off his helmet and shoved special teams coach Frank Ross. In hindsight, that stunt backfired. The sixth-year pro was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, handing Kansas City an additional 15 yards and positioning them for an early field goal.
Social media erupted with criticism of Boyd’s behavior, but Coach Ryans spoke out to defend his player’s intent.
"I don’t think he was pushing Frank in a disrespectful manner," Ryans said, per KPRC 2 Houston. "He was just overly fired up and thought he made a big play. So that narrative of him disrespecting a coach is incorrect."
However, Ryans was clear about Boyd’s penalty, emphasizing the need for composure in high-stakes moments.
"We can't lose our minds like that. Everyone knows the rule about taking your helmet off. We have to remain poised," Ryans reiterated, according to ESPN. "We cannot take a helmet off in a game, everyone knows and understands the rules."
Of course, Boyd’s penalty wasn’t the sole reason for the Texans’ loss. Missed opportunities, untimely penalties and Patrick Mahomes’ brilliance sealed Houston’s fate.
