The Kansas City Chiefs are 7-0 on the season and the only undefeated team in the league. The Chiefs have responded, no matter what has been thrown their way in 2024.
They are prepping for a battle against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football in Week 9. The defense has been the backbone of the team for the past two years and they've continued their stellar play this season.
They are fifth in the NFL in total defense (295) and scoring defense (17.6) but second in run defense (82.3). Even though they've been balling out, safety Bryan Cook's play has taken a dip.
Cook has secured 33 total tackles, four pass deflections, and one interception. Despite these stats, he hasn't been the same player on the field. Per PFF, he has a 56.8 overall grade, which is the lowest of any defensive starter for the Chiefs this season. In addition, he has a 51.4 coverage grade, which ranks 108th out of 146 qualified safeties.
Due to his shaky play, Cook played a season-low 49 snaps (84%) against the Las Vegas Raiders last week. In his absence, rookie Jaden Hicks played in nine snaps.
Although Cook's playing time hasn't been significantly slashed, this is something to keep an eye on. The Cincinnati product hasn't looked like the same player in coverage. The 25-year-old has allowed 11 receptions for 142 yards and a score. He's also missed four tackles in 2024.
Cook will still be a part of this defense in 2024, but his play must improve quickly.
