Modern day NBA legend Stephen Curry has won four championships with the Golden State Warriors.
But the question surrounding the Golden State Warriors right now, is whether Stephen Curry can win a fifth – or even come close.
At a lowly 10th in the Western Conference, with a 20-20 record, the team are going through a period of soul-searching.
One avenue open to the team is to draft away assets to try and get extra help now. Curry is urging the team to be sensible, comments that have generated some surprise in NBA circles.
Jonathan Kuminga has real potential
One player discussed in potential trade speculation to acquire a more ready-made superstar is 22-year-old prospect Jonathan Kuminga.
Kuminga is in his fourth NBA season after being drafted in 2021, and while he missed the Warriors’ win over the Timberwolves through injury, he was still a talking point.
NBA legend BJ Armstrong, a three-times champion with the Chicahgo Bulls, believes Jonathan Kuminga has all the tools to be the Golden State Warriors next superstar.
Armstrong told 95.7 The Game: “If Jonathan Kuminga chooses (the hard path), he will be the next great Golden State Warrior.
“The Chris Mullins, the Tim Hardaways, he will join those guys… This isn’t a talent issue from what I can see.”
Reaction to Armstrong comments
BJ Armstrong’s comments lay down the gauntlet to Jonathan Kuminga, to work hard and do everything within his grasp to live up to his potential.
Former Warriors star Festus Ezeli responded to Armstrong, speaking on the team’s post-game show after the win over Minnesota.
Ezeli said: “I see Jonathan Kuminga as an All-Star in the NBA. This season he is the X-factor that is going to help the Warriors get to where they want to be.
“His youth and athleticism is what they are missing right now.”
Kuminga suffered an ankle sprain earlier this month against the Grizzlies and is still sidelined, but hopes to make a return soon.
His transformation into the player the Warriors and Steve Kerr need, may not happen overnight.
And with Stephen Curry on a limited timeframe at the age of 36, Warriors fans just hope their greatness can overlap, if in Kuminga’s case, it happens at all.
