Stephen Curry is undoubtedly one of the all-time greats, but he has also been fortunate enough to play alongside some truly special players. As a result, Curry was put in a bit of a difficult position, when asked to name his GOAT teammate during an appearance on Complex's GOAT Talk.
"That's a dirty question," Curry said. "Well I guess, I'll pick Klay Thompson, that's my Splash Brother. A lot of great teammates to pick from, I didn't like that question."
(starts at 0:59 mark):
Klay Thompson is a solid pick. Thompson and Curry formed one of the greatest backcourts in NBA history and won four championships together on the Golden State Warriors in the 13 seasons they were teammates.
Thompson averaged 19.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in those years and made five All-Star teams to go with two All-NBA teams. The Splash Brothers formed a special bond during their time together and Thompson's departure this offseason to the Dallas Mavericks was a big blow to Curry.
Curry got emotional when talking about not having Klay as a teammate anymore and added it would only truly sink in for him when training camp begins. Well, camp is about to begin soon enough for the Warriors and it is going to feel weird not to have Thompson around. While he won't be there, another one of Curry's longtime teammates will be.
Draymond Green is still with the Warriors and would have been another good pick here. They have been teammates for 11 seasons and, of course, won four titles together. Green has played a big part in all of Curry's success and you could certainly make a strong case for him to get the nod over Thompson.
There is one other strong contender for that title of Curry's GOAT teammate, in my opinion, and that's Kevin Durant. Durant is undoubtedly the best player he has played with and they won two titles together in just three seasons.
If Durant and Curry had been teammates for a decade or so, he'd have been the easy pick. With that not being the case, though, Thompson is the one who I'd go with too, as Steph's GOAT teammate.
Stephen Curry's GOAT NBA Opponent
Later on in this episode, Curry was also asked to name his GOAT NBA opponent, and his pick there wasn't all that surprising.
"Probably LeBron (James) and the Cleveland Cavaliers just because we had four different NBA Finals competitions together," Curry stated. "So yeah, great memories."
LeBron James was the obvious selection. James and Curry faced off in the NBA Finals for four straight years from 2015 to 2018 and their careers are forever linked. They are the two greatest players of their generation and shared so many incredible moments on the court.
Curry and James also got to be teammates for the first time in a competitive setup at the Olympics and it was an incredible sight. They led Team USA to the gold and it's a pity that we're unlikely to ever see them together as teammates again. We'll just have to make do with watching them face off against each other.
