Steelers mock trade has Pittsburgh calling Washington land Pro Bowl target

Pittsburgh has a clear target that was just shoved onto the trade block.

Few teams have more cap space heading into the offseason than the Washington Commanders. They have $82.21 million to spend on free agency and the draft. They should be busy over the next two months as their team tries to elevate into Super Bowl contention. They have Jayden Daniels at quarterback and should do their best to take advantage of his rookie deal.

Washington might have the luxury of a mound of cap space to spend, but they could create more. They have some players who are potential cap casualties for the club. Jonathan Allen will depart Washington, according to multiple reports. The former 17th overall pick of the team from the 2017 NFL Draft is looking for a new home.

Pittsburgh has been outspoken about their interest in revamping their defensive line this offseason. Cam Heyward played terrific, but he doesn't have many great choices to help him along the defensive line outside of Keeanu Benton. The Steelers want to get younger and add better options in the trenches. Making a call to acquire Allen might be in their best interest.

Trade price for Jonathan Allen shouldn't be too rich for the Pittsburgh Steelers

If Washington doesn't want to, they don't need to trade Allen. They want to give their second-round pick from last year, Jer'Zhan Newton, more snaps. Allen has been consistent for Washington during his eight years with the club. He carries a cap hit of $16.47 million next season. His contract only lasts for this upcoming campaign, so his trade price should be cheap.

The Steelers acquiring Allen shouldn't cost too much. His cap hit is significant since he has yet to prove an elite stat sheet during a season. Pittsburgh would be trading the latest of their three seventh-round selections in the upcoming draft. It would ensure they will add Allen to their roster rather than hoping he would sign with them if he got cut.

Bringing Allen aboard would not take away the possibility of Mike Tomlin wanting a defensive lineman in the early rounds of the upcoming draft. Allen is 30 years old and will be heading into a contract year. They need a long-term plan up front as Cam Heyward gets older. Adding a veteran defensive tackle would give them a starting option while a rookie has time to adapt to the NFL.

If there is a clear path to acquire Allen for pennies on the dollar in a trade, then the Steelers would be foolish not to pay the price mapped out in this mock trade. He is a solid starter in the NFL and played for one of the better defensive units this past year. He would be a nice fit with Pittsburgh's defense and would help alleviate pressure off any incoming prospects from the draft.
