The Pittsburgh Steelers have a quarterback problem. Justin Fields is 2-0 this season after starting for the injured Russell Wilson, but the latter may be healthy enough to take back his spot under center.
Some would say that's a good problem to have but in football, it's not always that simple.
If you ask legendary Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who should start, he would say don't change a thing.
"If Russ is healthy, I'm sticking with Justin," the two-time Super Bowl champion said on his podcast Monday. "I think he has earned and deserves the right to stay [the starter.]"
Fields has thrown for a combined 273 yards and one touchdown in the first two weeks of the 2024 NFL season. Not overly impressive stuff, but 2-0 is 2-0.
Both wins were low-scoring affairs, with Pittsburgh winning by a combined 31-16.
If Fields has shown anything to convince head coach Mike Tomlin that he deserves to stay under center, it's been his ability to take care of the football and make clutch throws like this dime in the first half Sunday against Denver.
Wilson, on the other hand, is looking for his opportunity to redeem a poor tenure in Denver where he threw for just 930 yards and 42 touchdowns over two seasons.
If history is any indicator, Tomlin likes to ride the hot hand. Fields hasn't been winning pretty but he's still winning.
Pittsburgh's stout defense may be a bigger factor in how it's escaped the first two weeks but until Fields loses confidence or his rhythm with his receivers, there's really no need to fix what ain't broke.
