Steelers Announce Signing Experienced QB & Former 1st-Round, Pro Bowl Lineman

The Pittsburgh Steelers added two players to their roster ahead of facing the Jacksonville Jaguars in the preseason’s Week 1. The Steelers announced Thursday signing quarterback Logan Woodside and offensive lineman Andrus Peat.

“Woodside was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft,” Steelers.com’s Teresa Varley wrote. “He has also spent time with the Tennessee Titans (2020-21) and Atlanta Falcons (2022-23).”

While Woodside was a very late Day 3 pick, Peat went off the draft board at the No. 13 overall in his class.

“Peat was originally drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, spending nine seasons with them,” Varley added. “He appeared in 111 games, with 102 starts for the Saints, and was named to the Pro Bowl three times (2018-2020).”

To make room for Woodside and Peat on the roster, the Steelers waived long snapper Tucker Addington and guard Nick Broeker.

Steelers Sign QB Logan Woodside With Will Howard Unavailable

Pittsburgh’s addition of Woodside comes two days after rookie Will Howard suffered a hand injury.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin hasn’t rule out Howard playing in the preseason finale. But he won’t be available for Saturday’s game versus the Jaguars.

Tomlin announced Thursday that Aaron Rodgers (along with several other starters) won’t play in the contest. With that in mind, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly tweeted quarterback Skylar Thompson and Woodside will play a “large portion of game” against Jacksonville.

Woodside spent the beginning of this offseason with the Cincinnati Bengals, who drafted him at No. 249 overall in 2018. Woodside last appeared in an NFL game for the Atlanta Falcons in 2023.

He spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

The quarterback has played a lot in the preseason during his career. But in 13 regular season games, Woodside has never attempted a pass.

He has rushed for 10 yards on 14 attempts. Woodside has played 44 offensive snaps in his career.

Steelers Add Ex-Pro Bowl Guard Andrus Peat

Quarterbacks always steal the headlines, but Peat is hardly a footnote in Pittsburgh’s August 7 transactions.

The New Orleans Saints drafted Peat at No. 13 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft. He has more than 100 games of starting experience. Peat also made the Pro Bowl for the Saints three consecutive years from 2018-20.

The veteran remained an NFL starter when healthy until last season. The 2024 campaign was also the first year he wasn’t with the Saints.

Peat appeared in 15 contests for the Las Vegas Raiders last season. He made one start.

The 31-year-old has mostly played left guard in his NFL career. But he’s also played left tackle, particularly in recent years.

During his final season as a starter with the Saints in 2023, Peat switched to starting at left tackle after Week 6. In 2024 with the Raiders, he played 34 snaps at guard and 11 snaps at tackle.

Peat is essentially replacing Broeker, who is a guard. So, in all likelihood, the Steelers see Peat as a guard as well. But he has the versatility to kick outside if needed.

Including Peat, Pittsburgh has 15 offensive linemen on its roster, seven of which the team has listed as guards. Peat is one of those seven guards.
