Stan Bowman Drops Hint About Goalie Overhaul With Latest Comments

Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman spoke to the media and dropped some hints that he could be planning a shake up in the crease with his latest comments.

The Edmonton Oilers' dreams of landing John Gibson are officially over. Weeks of speculation, fueled by the team's goaltending woes in the Stanley Cup Final, came to an end as Gibson was dealt by the Anaheim Ducks to the Detroit Red Wings.

The Ducks got two draft picks and veteran netminder Petr Mrazek in return, shipping Gibson and his $6.4 million cap hit out of the Western Conference.

Gibson would've been a massive improvement on the Oilers' current tandem of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard, who have a combined $3.6 million.

But after Edmonton's crease meltdown in three of their four defeats to Florida, it was obvious that an improvement in goaltending was needed.

Goaltending changes in Edmonton will depend on the team's salary cap situation

Speaking to the media after the NHL Draft, GM Stan Bowman admitted goaltending is being given serious consideration moving forward. However, he also added that salary cap issues will factor into their decision-making.

'Part of the evaluation is: are the guys that we have the best option? Does it make the most sense to keep this group? And that's certainly a possibility. So I don't know. We're not at the point where we're saying we're definitely bringing in new goalies. It depends on how much space we have,' Bowman said.

Gibson is out of the picture, and St. Louis has inked touted young netminder Joel Hofer to a new contract; Edmonton's alternatives are rapidly dwindling.

To make a splash, the Oilers might need to think large, possibly in a blockbuster trade for an elite starter such as Ilya Sorokin of the Islanders ($8.25M AAV) or Thatcher Demko of Vancouver ($5M AAV), who remains unsigned to an extension.

For the Oilers, the quest for a consistent goaltender goes on, and the stakes couldn't be any higher.
