Southern Hospitality Season 3, Episode 9 Recap: Hold the Cattitude

Last week on Southern Hospitality, TJ successfully launched Sir Wieners. His friendship with Emmy and Will still hung by a thread. Emmy defended her relationship yet again, this time to her younger sister. Meanwhile, Lake and Michols commiserated about their sexuality and their families’ reactions. After Vegas, Joe acted as if he and Maddi got married for real. But their fake wedding just highlighted their relationship problems.

This week on Southern Hospitality, Emmy invites the cast to her law school prom for Will. TJ gets closer to the truth behind the latest Will cheating rumors. Michols has an emotional conversation with his stepdad and offers to support Lake in the same way. Leva holds an event to help get kittens adopted. This leads to some emotional conversations and major revelations for the Republic crew. Maddi makes up with Grace but still has tension with Joe. He comes to a realization that might save their relationship. Here’s what happened on “Honeymoon Is Over.”

As they get pedicures, Mia asks Maddi if she honestly sees herself marrying Joe. Maddi doesn’t give a straight answer, saying she wants to pump the breaks. She’s so busy with her career, she doesn’t have time to move or look at houses like Joe wants. Mia theorizes that Joe is jealous of her career. In a confessional, Maddi admits that while Joe tries to hit fast forward, she wants to hit mute, or at least pause.

While golfing with the guys, Joe insists everything’s “amazing.” In reality, they just had a big fight the day before. Joe laments his commute to Maddi’s every day. He wonders why Maddi never stays at his place, whereas he stays at hers most nights. Brad jokes that everyone knows Maddi “wears the pants in the relationship.” Joe says that Maddi can be selfish without realizing it. Brad and Will advise Joe to ask Maddi to meet him in the middle. For instance, she could stay at his place a few nights per week. Will also jokes that Joe can stay with him and Emmy.

Speaking of Will and Emmy, he’s more interested in settling down, getting a house, and letting Emmy live the “housewife life.” He mentions that she helps him with things like laundry while he’s at law school, and he wants to pay her back for that. A skeptical Brad says, “Your way of paying her back is marriage?” Joe compares it to a business deal. He and Brad are both put off by the “unsexy” and “unromantic” way Will talks about the relationship.

Emmy invites the whole Republic crew to celebrate Will’s law school prom. She had to miss the actual barrister’s ball, so she’s going to throw another event. That night, Austin’s girlfriend Allie shows up, and Emmy acts like her best friend. TJ is very confused by this. After all, Emmy and Will accused Allie’s brother of making up cheating rumors to hurt Will’s law school career. When a producer asks Emmy about Allie, she says that their moms do bible study together.

Austin asks Allie to go to the prom with him (via pizza). Will also does a prom proposal, writing the letters on balloons with a sharpie (though when he shows this to Emmy, it’s not all legible). No one is impressed by this, considering Emmy went above and beyond to plan his bash. But Emmy swoons nonetheless.

One night at Republic, Joe has a group of his friends visiting from Atlanta. This makes him act like the boss. As Joe mansplains to Maddi, she unleashes an epic eye roll (I’m sure lots of viewers took a screenshot). When the fight moves from the kitchen to the main floor, TJ jokes, “I guess the honeymoon’s over!” Michols, as usual, acts like the only adult in the room and pulls Joe aside.

The fight continues a few days later at Leva’s event to get kittens adopted. At least then they’re off duty! Maddi admits she feels suffocated by Joe.

Michols meets with his stepdad

Michols has dinner with his stepdad. In a confessional, he admits that the importance of “machismo” in his culture made him feel like less of a man for being gay. But his stepdad is supportive. His mom doesn’t even call him to check in. His mom and stepdad aren’t together anymore, and don’t speak these days.

Michols shares how his sexuality was discovered. As a senior in high school, he began messaging with another guy on Instagram. His mom went through the DMs while using his phone. When she realized it was a man, they didn’t speak for a week.

His stepdad reassures Michols that he has to live for himself. Which is what Michols told Lake last week. Michols is grateful for his stepdad’s support and hopes that one day he won’t feel the pang for his mom’s approval. He shows pictures of Preston cooking and jokes about falling for a “gringo.” His dad says Preston should learn to cook mofongo.

The conversation goes so well, Michols advises Lake to talk to her dad. But she admits she’s not ready to be confrontational. She doesn’t want to jeopardize the legacy her grandparents built. Michols says he’ll support her whenever she’s ready.

Leva advises Joe

Leva has lunch with Joe after he tried to ask for a month off to travel with Maddi on tour. Joe tells Leva he doesn’t want Maddi to travel alone. She’s his “partner in life” and the love of his life and he’ll do anything to support her. Leva tells Joe not to sacrifice his own career. She’s worried if he does, he’ll resent Maddi.

Two years ago, he told Leva he wanted to own a bar. But now, Leva’s noticed he’s mopey at the door, instead of motivated. She and Lamar think he’s a model employee. They could see themselves going into business with Joe one day. But he needs to be a “rock” and focus.

Leva gets through to Joe. He realizes he’s been neglecting his career. He wants his own accomplishments, so Maddi can be his biggest fan as well. Based on the way they’re bickering, it seems like time apart to focus on themselves would be a win-win.

One of the reasons Maddi is so annoyed with Joe is that he keeps harping on her friendship with Grace. But he’s not the only one. Mia also asks Maddi where she stands with Grace after Vegas. Mia says she’s never seen a more one-sided friendship. But Maddi has the longest relationship with Grace and comes to her defense. She says Grace takes accountability when they’re one-on-one. Maddi also tells Joe that Grace supported her last year when he wasn’t around.

However, Maddi does confront Grace (after she gets her face painted like a cat) at Leva’s event. Grace is already a bit emotional about missing her cat Fergie, who lives with her ex (#freefergie).

Grace is upset that Maddi thought she wouldn’t have shown up to the Vegas gig at all. She also calls out Maddi for not hanging out with her outside the group. Maddi says it’s because Grace isn’t allowed at her house after she hooked up with Oisin. Grace takes responsibility for that, and wishes she never did it. She knows she put herself in a corner and wants to get herself out. Maddi is proud of Grace and wishes everyone else could see this side of her.

TJ cracks the case on Will

TJ asks Mia to prom via hot dogs. He shares that Emmy has been texting him a lot more lately. This confuses him, because Taylor said Emmy blamed TJ for her rough summer. He hasn’t heard from Will.

Austin also tells TJ that he didn’t hear the cheating rumor from Allie’s brother. That means the story Will told everyone is a lie. TJ and Brad decide to find out who the girl is. It looks like Southern Hospitality is about to have its own Miami Girl moment. Judging by the preview for next week, it all leads to an explosive season finale.
