Soap Opera Critics Review Hits and Misses: Top 10 Moments of the Week of April 21-25

Soap Hub looks at the Hits and Misses for the week of April 21-25 in the worlds of Days of Our LivesGeneral Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless, and Beyond the Gates.

10. MISS: Bill manipulates things at his law firm (BTG). That Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) is cold. The women who sued him have settled and are back at the law firm. Part of the settlement involved having a seat at the table and potentially influencing who’s hired. Bill engineered things and added Tomas (Alex Alegria) to their committee so Tomas could report on everything happening. How does this solve their hostile workplace environment?

9. HIT EJ is awake (DAYS). Once he woke up from his medically induced coma, EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) threw us for a loop. Is he a changed man? Right now, he’s showing a kinder, gentler side. But has he truly learned his lesson? We’re digging how we can’t tell if this version is an act.

8. MISS: Adam asks Chelsea to work with him at Newman Media (Y&R). Every time we see Adam (Mark Grossman) and Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan), they are together. And now they potentially want to extend their relationship to a professional one? It feels like making her COO of Newman Media would only be for her to rein in Adam when he is about to go too far. It’s hard to believe she would abandon her choice fashion job.

7. HIT: Deception dumped Natalia (GH). Natalia (Eva LaRue) can’t keep a massive secret from her coworkers and expect no consequences. The fact that she hid her marriage to Sidwell (Carlo Rota) was unacceptable, considering they went into business with him. And now they’re stuck with him when she could have warned them about him.

6. MISS: Rafe and Jada break up (DAYS). This was arguably Rafe’s (Galen Gering) healthiest relationship, and he and Jada (Elia Cantu) were super cute together. Thanks to EJ and Arnold Feniger (also Galen Gering), their bond broke, and there’s no going back. At least not for now.

5. HIT: Lily and Audra teaming up to interrogate Holden (Y&R). We’re going to ignore the hostilities and snide comments these two exchanged. The best part of their recent interaction was when Lily (Christel Khalil) and Audra (Zuleyka Silver) interrogated Holden (Nathan Owens) to find out about Damian (Jermaine Rivers) and Aristotle Dumas. They were fierce and unrelenting.

4. MISS: Lulu’s adoption article (GH). It feels like Lulu (Alexa Havins) simply pitched the word “adoption.” And now she has to write a feature on the subject. What angle is she taking? This subject has been covered a million times over. What is she bringing to the topic that’s fresh and new? Unless she will out Brook Lynn’s (Amanda Setton) secret, which would get her a million views on the Llanview Banner website. Also, was she taking notes during her interview with Lucas (Van Hansis)? Just record it.

3. HIT: Scott Clifton as a potentially dying Liam Spencer (B&B). While this sudden storyline came out of nowhere, we appreciate that Scott Clifton (Liam) has completely committed to it. And he’s killing it as Liam reacts to the thought of dying at such a young age and potentially leaving his kids.

2. MISS: Brooke and Taylor at the fashion show (B&B). The Forrester Creations fashion show was fun and well executed. Brooke’s (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Taylor’s (Rebecca Budig) incessant fighting was not. Brooke couldn’t understand why Taylor was at the fashion show. Taylor should have appeared backstage and then gone out to her seat. Meanwhile, Taylor blamed much of Ridge’s pain over the coup on Brooke. And that’s not true. They even started sniping about their nicknames, “Logan” and “Doc.” These two are too grown to fight like this for any man, let alone Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye).

1. HIT: Anita’s karaoke comeback (BTG). Yes, the performance was amazing. Anita (Tamara Tunie), with backup singers Dani (Karla Mosley) and Naomi (Arielle Prepetit), gave such good karaoke. What was more fascinating happened before the former Articulette got back up on stage. Anita’s fears and insecurities were on display for Vernon (Clifton Davis), who had to talk her down and help her see she’s as good as she ever was. And as a result, she has a real chance at a comeback. Loved seeing Anita’s more human side.

Honorable Mentions

B&B

HIT: Ridge tells Carter he was right about branching out globally. We can all agree that Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor) never should have resorted to a coup. However, Ridge and Eric shouldn’t have rejected Carter’s proposal to expand the Forrester Creations brand. It wasn’t a whim of an idea. Carter said he researched it for years. So it was a satisfying moment when Ridge told Carter he was right about the brand expansion.
MISS: Eric is suddenly and once again hardcore Team Brooke. During the coup, Eric (John McCook) was all about Taylor. And he never even tried to speak to Brooke to get her side of things. Now he’s suddenly all about Brooke again. While this isn’t out of character for him, it was just odd to see him go as far as to create a showstopper inspired by the Portofino wedding dress.

BTG

HIT: Doug seeks out therapy from Nicole. Doug (Jason Graham) seeking therapy from Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix) felt like an earned moment. Doug has been feeding his gambling addiction for the first two months of BTG. Now he’s to the point where he sees the damage he’s doing, and he feels out of control. It was only natural for him to turn to his friend and coworker for help. It was great to hear his perspective.
MISS: Abrupt cut to Doug and Vanessa making love. We were all for Doug and Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli) reconnecting in that hotel room. The problem was that it came out of nowhere. One second, Doug spies on a cozy Vanessa and Joey Armstrong (Jon Lindstrom) at Uptown, and then the next time we see them, they are going at it in some hotel room. It was jarring. We had to rewind to see if we missed a scene.

DAYS

HIT: Remembering the history between Brady and Gabi. At first, we tried to remember why Brady (Eric Martsolf) had such a problem helping Gabi (Cherie Jimenez) out. Loved Brady reminding us of how Gabi and Stefan (Brandon Barash) screwed him over. Anytime there are consequences to someone’s bad behavior, it is a beautiful thing.
MISS: The Live Bachelor auction (DAYS). While the set decoration for the hospital fundraiser was adorable, we have no idea how it was supposed to raise enough money to help the cause. If it wasn’t for Maggie paying a cool million for a “date,” would they have raised anything substantial? Also, the auction was held at the pub, and so there were about 15 people there to watch it.

GH

HIT: Nina and Portia work together. This week, we saw Nina (Cynthia Watros) and Portia (Brook Kerr) meet secretly and figure out how to bring down Drew (Cameron Mathison). Sure, we’re not wild about their hiring an escort, drugging Drew, and getting caught in the “act” photos, but it was still fun to see them collaborate.
MISS: Jordan ended things with Isaiah. Why did Jordan (Tanisha Harper) need to end her relationship with Isaiah (Sawandi Wilson) just because she’s going undercover with Sidwell? It’s not like she’s still trying to date Sidwell. She has a real job with him. Somebody needs to have her back. We’re happy that Anna knows, but Anna could get distracted by a number of things. We need more Jordan and Isaiah, not less.

Y&R

HIT: The Abbott Mansion refresh. We’re happy that Jack (Peter Bergman) loved the refresh for Diane’s (Susan Walters) sake. Because if he hadn’t, we would have had to listen to him go on and on about it for a long time. This way, Jack is happy and feeling nostalgic. His flashback to his conversation with his father was sweet. And now we don’t need to hear any more conversations focused on this remodeling of the iconic Y&R home.
MISS: Phyllis’s insistence that Daniel work for Abbott Communications. It’s admirable that Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) wants to help Daniel (Michael Graziadei) live life again. Why can’t she realize that her way isn’t necessarily his way? Listen to him, Phyllis. Give him space and don’t drag him into something he doesn’t want to do.
