Silver Minings: Geno Smith to receive $16 million signing bonus while waiting for an extension

   

The Las Vegas Raiders' search for a legitimate quarterback led them to trade a third-round pick for Geno Smith. Smith is 27-22 as a starter the last three seasons with 12,766 yards passing, adding a steady veteran.

Smith’s connection to Pete Carroll made it an easy decision to grab him from the Seattle Seahawks. With the Seahawks not able to land a deal that would extend Smith’s contract with the team, he was dealt to the Silver and Black

Raiders Nearing Geno Smith Extension?

With Smith officially on the roster, his contract followed him to the Raiders. There are rumours of the team working on an extension to give the former West Virgina a raise. While Spytek works on the new contract, Smith was due a signing bonus that took effect Sunday. The thought was the extension would be done before then, but the Raiders allowed Smith to receive the bonus Sunday.

The signing bonus will be folded into the larger bonus when the negotiations are finished. The Raiders letting the deadline pass displays their commitment to Smith. If he performs well in the foreseeable future, he will be the starting quarterback for the 2025 season.
