‘Shocking’ Jets Trade Pitch Acquires $60 Million WR, Dramatically Increases Playoff Odds

New York Jets fans have been begging all offseason for a WR2.

Courtland Sutton, Broncos

Alex Kay of Bleacher Report answered their prayers with this hypothetical “shocking trade” that could dramatically increase the Jets’ playoff chances.

New York Jets receive: veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton

Denver Broncos receive: a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick

“If the Denver Broncos can’t rekindle the magic of 2024, the team could become sellers ahead of the trade deadline. One candidate to be sent packing is Courtland Sutton, the polarizing wide receiver now entering the final year of his contract. Sutton has yet to earn an extension despite posting the best statistical performance of his career last season,” Kay explained.

“Injuries and inconsistency have plagued Sutton for the majority of his NFL journey, one that could be further negatively impacted in 2025 due to the presence of Devaughn Vele. Vele, an unheralded seventh-round pick last year, is turning heads at training camp and appears to be the heir apparent to Sutton’s No. 1 receiver role. With him waiting in the wings and still having three seasons left on a dirt-cheap rookie deal, Sutton could soon find himself expendable,” Kay added.

This Trade Proposal Makes a Ton of Sense for the Jets

Sutton, 29, has one year remaining on his $60.8 million contract.

According to Spotrac’s calculated market value, Sutton could command a three-year $79.7 million contract. That $26.6 million annual salary would rank No. 11 among the highest-paid wide receivers in football, per Over The Cap.

“The New York Jets could be very interested in Sutton’s services if he’s made available. The club needs to find a running mate for top wideout Garrett Wilson after the failed Davante Adams experiment lasted just 11 games. With Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazard currently penciled in as the potential starters alongside Wilson, Gang Green would be wise to make a run at Sutton. The receiver would provide far better support than new quarterback Justin Fields’ current options after Wilson and give the squad a better chance of making a postseason foray,” Kay added.

Sutton hasn’t proven to be a superstar wide receiver. However, what he brings is a solid floor. In six of his seven seasons in the NFL, Sutton has recorded 704 receiving yards or more.

Is the WR2 Debate Overrated by Jets Fans and Analysts?

Jets senior reporter Eric Allen openly questioned one of the biggest debates on social media.

“Not coach speak here, but they’re going to use a lot of different personnel sets. So I think we get caught up in this tagline: Who is the No. 2? I don’t necessarily know if that is going to be so important,” Allen said on the Official Jets Podcast. “All of these guys are going to get some run.

Ohhhhh@eallenjets said more people should be talking about Tyler Johnson in the #Jets WR2 conversation… 👀

EA also talked about how we might be overblowing the whole who is WR2 debate in this offense. Instead suggesting it’ll take a village, a lot of different people could… pic.twitter.com/FUEcYAlMzG

If the Jets were to pick a No. 2, the debate is normally between Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazard. However, EA said to keep an eye out for Tyler Johnson.
