Shocker: Broncos are exploring trade possibilities for veteran WR Tim Patrick

According to 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis, the Denver Broncos are moving on from veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick. He states that the team is getting strong interest on the trade market for the 30-year old wide receiver who is coming off a strong camp and preseason.

Patrick took a pay cut to return to the Broncos this offseason after missing the past two seasons due to Achilles and ACL injuries. He made it through training camp and the preseason without any setbacks or injuries and was playing with the starting offense. We even saw him catch Bo Nix’s touchdown pass vs. the Packers in week two of the preseason. Now, the Broncos are looking to move on from him mostly because of the depth at receiver on their roster.

Rookie seventh-round pick Devaughn Vele had a breakout camp and is a very similar player to Patrick. He had an outstanding camp and could move into a starting role now with Patrick leaving the team. I would also expect Lil’Jordan Humphrey to make the roster now with Patrick not making the team. He is another big target who produced last season, is a good run blocker, knows Payton’s system, and can contribute on special teams.

The Broncos will release Patrick if they cannot trade him, much like veteran Samaje Perine, but I am hopeful they can get something for both players. Still, this is a surprising move by the Broncos since Patrick was a favorite amongst fans, coaches, and teammates. Unfortunately, these things happen and opportunities open up for new players like rookie Devaughn Vele.
