Seattle Seahawks meet with Shedeur Sanders in likely fruitless move

The Seattle Seahawks are not going to tip their hand too much in what they plan to do in the 2025 NFL draft. The team clearly has needs, such as along the interior of the offensive line, but general manager John Schneider is probably not going to take a guard or center in the first round, based on his draft history. Could Seattle choose a quarterback instead?

The issue is that the Seahawks currently pick at number 18 in the first round. The 2025 class of quarterbacks is not overly deep with perhaps just two quarterbacks probably going in round one. Those would be Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders. There are QB-needy teams ahead of Seattle in the draft, though, so they probably will not last until 18.

We know that Seattle is somewhat interested in Sanders because the team met with the quarterback, according to various outlets, at the East-West Shrine Bowl. But before anyone jumps to any conclusions that Seattle wants Sanders badly and is willing to move up in the draft to get him, let's push pause.

Seattle Seahawks reportedly meet with quarterback Shedeur Sanders at the East-West Shrine Bowl

Schneider has met with many quarterbacks before drafts. When Russell Wilson was still entrenched as QB1 for the Seahawks, Schneider met with Josh Allen, who was later drafted by the Buffalo Bills. He also met with Patrick Mahomes, whose future was winning Super Bowls for the Kansas City Chiefs.

While Seattle's meeting with Sanders is newsworthy, we should also assume that almost every NFL team that has representatives at the college All-Star game will be meeting with Sanders. The game allows teams to meet with any number of players, and none of those count toward pre-draft visits. Plus, meet-and-greets are fine, but teams do not do a deep dive at that time.

Another important note is that the Seahawks likely do not have the trade pieces, including players and/or draft picks, to move up much in the draft. At least, not well into the top ten. A quarterback is unlikely to go at number one as the Tennessee Titans hold that pick and they are seemingly looking at other position groups to fix first.

Out of the top ten teams set to pick first in the draft, three are in need of a quarterback. This includes the New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Jets. If those teams stand pat, then they are likely in some order to choose Ward and Sanders leaving Seattle out of reach.

That is, of course, unless the Seahawks trade Geno Smith to Pete Carroll and the Raiders for the number seven pick and then Seattle takes Sanders. That is extremely unlikely to happen, but there is a chance of anything happening in the NFL.
