Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Jarran Reed could have started negotiating with other NFL teams on Monday and signed with another club on Wednesday as an unrestricted free agent.
Instead, the former Alabama standout will stay with the Seahawks after agreeing on a three-year contract extension that could be worth as much as $25 million, the Seattle Times, NFL Network and ESPN reported on Sunday.
The extension includes a $4.5 million signing bonus and $10 million in guaranteed money.
A second-round selection of Seattle in the 2016 NFL Draft from the Crimson Tide’s 2015 CFP national-championship team, Reed left the Seahawks for two seasons before returning in 2023.
In 2024, Reed recorded 45 tackles, five tackles for loss, 15 quarterback hits and 4.5 sacks while playing 680 defensive snaps, the second-most among Seattle’s linemen.
The first time that Reed was eligible for free agency, Seattle signed him to a two-year, $23 million contract extension after the 2019 season.
But the Seahawks released him on March 26, 2021, with a year left on the deal. According to reports at the time, Seattle wanted Reed to restructure the contract to reduce his salary-cap line of $13.975 million while Reed was seeking a contract extension.
Reed joined the Kansas City Chiefs for a one-year, $5.5 million contract in 2021. In 2022, Reed played for the Green Bay Packers after signing a one-year, $3.25 million contract.
The Seahawks brought Reed back to Seattle with a two-year, $9 million contract in 2023.
In his nine NFL seasons, Reed has played in 139 regular-season games and nine playoff contests. In regular-season play, Reed has 388 tackles, 41 tackles for loss, 111 quarterback hits, 38.5 sacks, 11 passes defended, 11 forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries. He has three postseason sacks.
