Another day, another roster tweak for the Seattle Seahawks.
Apart from formally processing the trade for Ernest Jones IV, the only other Seahawks transaction listed in the wire for Thursday is the waiving of safety Ty Okada. Jones was traded for Jerome Baker, so this move was nothing to do with Jones’ arrival.
Okada was one of the better preseason performers this season, but didn’t make the initial 53-man roster. As was the case last year, he was signed to the practice squad. Last week, Okada was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster after starting safety Rayshawn Jenkins was placed on IR. He’s appeared in two games, playing six defensive snaps against the San Francisco 49ers and 48 combined special teams snaps against the 49ers and Atlanta Falcons.
With Okada waived, it’s more likely than not he’ll return to the practice squad as long as he’s not claimed. His departure may be a signal that second-year safety Jerrick Reed II is ready to be activated off PUP and onto the active roster. Reed was designated for a return to practice last week, and was a full participant on Wednesday. Right tackle George Fant could also make his return from IR, so either way expect some more roster movement soon from the Seahawks.
