Seahawks Star DK Metcalf Has Shockingly Requested a Trade - Newsweek

The Seattle Seahawks team in 2025 is set to look far different, as the team announced they have released wide receiver Tyler Lockett. To make matters worse, fellow star receiver DK Metcalf has requested a trade.

According to Ian Rapoport, "Seahawks star WR DK Metcalf has requested a trade from Seattle and the team has decided to explore it, per me and Tom Pelissero. There is likely to be significant interest in the Seattle star, and both sides will dig into it. A big-time WR who may be on the move."

Rapoport indicated that Metcalf requested a trade, and the Seahawks plan to explore the market for their speedy deep-ball threat.

Metcalf has been the Seahawks' premier receiver for the past six seasons. He has eclipsed over 1,000 yards in three of those seasons and has not dropped below 900 receiving yards his entire career.

Metcalf secured 992 yards and five touchdowns throughout the 2024 season.

The Seahawks have had issues regarding their quarterback position. Despite the team placing full faith in Geno Smith, the signal caller had an issue with turnovers in 2024. He would throw 15 interceptions in total.

Smith might not be the long-term answer for the Seahawks, despite being a viable starter. The frustration could be within that fact for Metcalf to want to request a trade.

What makes the trade request being granted seem odd for the Seahawks is the team also just released Lockett. With Lockett and Metcalf presumably needing a new team in 2025, Seattle's pass-catching options have taken a major hit.

The good news is the list of available wide receivers for the NFL continues to get deeper, as teams are cutting star talent due to cap room issues. The Seahawks might be thinking they can get a cheaper option in free agency to allow two starters to walk.

Seattle is also apparently not willing to deal with Metcalf needing a bigger contract, as he is due $18 million in the final year of his deal. Whatever team is willing to trade for Metcalf will need to also presumably give him a new contract.

The Seahawks have chosen to allow Metcalf to find a new home rather than get hit with whatever new contract the star receiver is looking for.
