Seahawks Sign Speedster as Roster Shuffle Continues 1 Week Before Preseason

Seattle Seahawks cut ties with rookie defender after just two days - Yahoo Sports

The roster moves continue for the Seattle Seahawks with the team’s first NFL preseason game versus the Las Vegas Raiders fast approaching on Thursday, August 7. Seattle announced a series of roster moves on July 31, 2025, including the release of a defender just days after signing.

The Seahawks signed an undrafted cornerback with plenty of athletic traits. Seattle added former Southeastern Louisiana standout Keydrain Calligan, who was initially signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent.

To make room for Calligan, the Seahawks released defensive tackle Thor Griffith. Houston cut Calligan one week ago, opening up an opportunity for Seattle to give the rookie a chance.

“In his one season at Southeastern Louisiana, Calligan recorded 39 tackles, four passes defensed, 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception and one forced fumble, earning first-team All-Southland Conference honors,” Seahawks.com’s John Boyle detailed on July 31.

“Calligan, who is 6-foot, 200 pounds, began his career as Louisiana-Monroe before spending one season at Jackson State and one at Southeastern Louisiana.”

Let’s dive into the Seahawks’ latest roster moves.

New Seahawks CB Keydrain Calligan Ran a 4.42-Second 40 Yard Dash

Despite going undrafted, Calligan grabbed attention for his pro day workout showing off elite speed. Calligan clocked a 4.42-second 40-time ahead of the 2025 NFL draft.

“Southeast Louisiana all-conference safety-corner Keydrain Calligan (6-0, 200, 4.42 speed, 20 bench reps), met or Zoom with 15 #NFLDraft teams, got high marks from scouts for explosiveness, cover skills, positional versatility,” KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson explained in an April 26, message on X.

Scouting Repot on Keydrain Calligan: ‘Will Fly Up & Lay the Boom on the Runner/Receiver’

Here is how Football Gameplan’s Emory Hunt described Calligan ahead of the 2025 NFL draft.

“Very good size for the position and does a really good job in playing physical on both ends,” Hunt noted in his scouting report on Calligan. “Strong in run support and when he had to trigger downhill from his zone drops. Will fly up and lay the boom on the runner/receiver. Can turn and run with the receiver, playing the upfield shoulder and is able to wall-off or pin him to the sideline,

“Has the length to challenge the ball at the catch point. Matches up well vs. bigger wide receivers and has the flexibility to guard athletic tight ends as well.”

Calligan joins a talented group of Seahawks corners including Devon Witherspoon, Riq Woolen and Josh Jobe.

Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald on Upcoming NFL Season: ‘We Want to Win the Championship’

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald has made it clear that the expectations are rising in Seattle. Macdonald has a message to fans and media members with high expectations: “bring it on.”

“Our expectations can’t be any higher than what we expect from ourselves,” Macdonald said on July 25, per Seahawks.com. “Bring it on. We want to win the championship, but in order to do that we have to become a championship team. We have to become the team that we’re trying to be.

“We have a vision for our team, of who we want to be and we believe that that vision is a team that the 12s are going to be really proud of but it takes time. We have to put it together, we have to do the work, we have to do all the meetings, do all the reps, we have to make those tough decisions.”
