Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey has likely been waiting to be traded, and he must think there is a pretty good chance that he gets moved on June 1 or after. His former team, the Los Angeles Rams, might be a player for him, but could the Seattle Seahawks be too?
On social media on Tuesday, Ramsey posted what might appear to be a cryptic tweet as he wrote, "5..." We are also currently five days away from the beginning of June. That is important because if the Dolphins wait to trade Ramsey until after June 1, the team would save nearly $10 million in cap space. Waiting makes sense.
Wherever Ramsey goes, he is going to be expensive for his new team. He is currently signed through 2028, and his cap hit goes up to $25 million in 2026 and to $35 million in 2028. He also isn't getting younger, as he will be 34 years old by the time his deal is done. That's quite old for a cornerback.
Seahawks should chase a Jalen Ramsey trade that would make the Rams sad
Teams wanting to trade for Ramsey would have to have the cap space to do so. The Rams can make room, but the Seahawks still have north of $30 million to spend this offseason, and much more next offseason. Seattle can afford him, and Ramsey would put the finishing touches on the Seahawks' defense.
Seattle is obviously thinking of bringing in another cornerback. The team has met with Shaquill Griffin twice this offseason. He would be a relatively inexpensive option, and is good in coverage.
He isn't as good as Ramsey, however. While Ramsey's quarterback rating allowed increased to 83.2 last season, that number is still quite good and lower than he had in two of his Pro Bowl seasons. He is a shutdown corner who would be a perfect fit opposite Riq Woolen.
Adding Ramsey would be good for Seattle, but would also hurt the Rams. The Seahawks know well how much the cornerback can affect a game because Seattle faced him twice in most years between 2019 and 2022. His battles with DK Metcalf were legendary.
General manager John Schneider and head coach Mike Macdonald are trying to make the team good by having a great defense. The unit ranked in the top 10 last season and brought nearly everyone back. Seattle also added defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence. Adding Ramsey would cement the secondary as one of the best in the NFL.
The question is how much it would take to get Ramsey. If the Dolphins want a first-round draft pick, the answer should be no. But if they are willing to part with a third-round choice, the Seahawks should jump at the chance.
