Seahawks prediction adds Sam Darnold insurance in 76-TD quarterback after trade up

The Seattle Seahawks made some bold moves at the quarterback position this year, with the team parting ways with Geno Smith and signing Sam Darnold.

Smith was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders after it was abundantly clear the veteran didn't really want to be in Seattle anymore. Seattle quickly replaced him, though, and now hopes that Darnold can be a long-term solution.

But there is no telling what Darnold will be in Seattle. He was fantastic with the Minnesota Vikings last season, but his career had been a bust up until that point. Minnesota also offered a much better supporting cast than Seattle currently has. That's why it might be wise for the Seahawks to consider adding a young quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Chad Reuter of NFL.com obviously subscribes to that notion, as evidenced by him mocking Quinn Ewers to Seattle in the second round of his five-round mock draft. The Seahawks come away with Ewers after a trade up in Round 2 with the Tennessee Titans to pick No. 35.

It wasn't long ago that Ewers was projected to be one of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft, but things have changed since then and now the Texas product is viewed as a Day 2 pick, at best.

Part of the reason that's the case is Ewers wasn't able to build on his impressive 2023 campaign that really put him on the map. There are also concerns about his arm strength, among other things.

"The biggest question for Ewers as a prospect is arm strength," The Draft Network's Keith Sanchez said in a scouting report. "While Ewers has enough arm strength to get the ball down the field, ball velocity will be questioned. Routes that require plus-level arm strength such as deep comebacks and deep dig routes may challenge Ewers and his ability to consistently make the throw without defenders being able to break the pass up."

The second round still feels a bit early to take Ewers, especially for a team that just dropped $100 million on a new quarterback in free agency. Not to mention, taking Ewers this early wouldn't show much confidence in Darnold, which could make things awkward before he even takes the field.

Instead, we could maybe see the Seahawks taking a flyer on a young quarterback in the later rounds of the draft. But, if Darnold has a rough year in 2025, we'd expect the Seahawks to get more aggressive at the position in 2026.
