Seahawks make move to snag new offensive piece from Denver, he’s spent time with Derrick Henry

The Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks have made franchise-altering moves before. One new movie could be another eventful chapter.

Seahawks make move to snag new offensive piece from Denver, he’s spent time with Derrick Henry

For more than a decade, Pete Carroll was the name in the Pacific Northwest. The Seattle Seahawks head coach managed to not only reach two Super Bowls and win one, but he also managed to bookend his time by helping fleece a team in historical fashion.

Carroll’s Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos in 2022 in one of the most expensive trades in NFL history. Most expected Seattle to struggle, but the team that struggled was Denver. Carroll was able to add two wins between the final Wilson year and the first starting Geno Smith year,

Meanwhile, Denver hit rock bottom. When Carroll left after the 2023 season, many expected Smith to take another step back. Instead, rookie head coach Mike Macdonald managed to win more games with Geno Smith in a single season than Pete Carroll ever did.

The Broncos, in turn, moved on from Wilson after the 2023 season. They still have the quarterback on the books for the 2025 season. Before Wilson can fully remove himself from Denver’s equation, however, another potential flashpoint move has been made with a connection between Seattle and Denver.

Tom Pelissero reports former Broncos piece moving into Pacific Northwest

In a post made on Twitter/X on February 13 by NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the insider reported that the Seahawks would be getting a former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator.

Justin Outten, who spent all of 2022 coaching Russell Wilson as an offensive coordinator, was hired by the Seahawks to act as the team’s run-game coordinator. He had spent the last two years coaching the Tennessee Titans, with one of those coaching Derrick Henry.

“The #Seahawks are hiring Justin Outten as run game specialist, per source. Outten, the former #Broncos offensive coordinator, spent the past two seasons on staff in Tennessee,” Pelissero posted.

The Seahawks’ new run game coordinator worked as a Titans running backs coach and run-game coordinator in 2023 and then as their tight end coach in 2024.

Seahawks took a risk on Outten, but could look like geniuses

Outten’s had a rough go of it the past three years. Working as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator in 2022, he presided over Wilson’s implosion in Denver. Following that, he coached the Titans in Derrick Henry’s last season. Henry performed adamantly, but led the year team to move on.

Outten then was assigned to coach tight ends and now he’s on the move once again. Outten has seen lots of movement in recent years, but it hasn’t been a clear rise.

However, the Seahawks have proven able to take pieces that have seemingly been stuck in second gear and put them into overdrive like with Geno Smith.

They’ve also been able to pluck some winners like head coach Mike Macdonald. It could be another move that ends up beating expectations in Seattle’s favor. Of course, one can only wait and see.
