The Seattle Seahawks seemingly really want to add an additional cornerback this offseason, but haven't done so yet. They have met with former Seattle cornerback Shaquill Griffin twice, but have not inked him to a deal.
The team did re-sign Josh Jobe this offseason to go along with standouts Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen. There is certainly no guarantee that Jobe, who has been good in OTAs this offseason, will be consistently good once real games begin.
Now, Seattle might have a chance to pounce on a recently released former Pro Bowl cornerback. The Green Bay Packers are reportedly moving on from Jaire Alexander, and he will be a free agent who can sign anywhere. He does have a big cap hit, but Seattle can afford him.
Seahawks should look into signing recently released Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander
Any team that adds the 28-year-old cornerback has cap hits of $24,636,355 in 2025 and $27,018,708 in 2026. If he stays healthy, Alexander will be worth every penny a team needs to pay him, but the question is whether he will be available for most games.
He played a full season in 2022, but only four in 2021, and just seven in each of the last two seasons. Maybe he is injury-prone, and maybe he doesn't know how to play through pain well. The risk a team takes in acquiring him is not knowing which is the case.
But there is also a high reward to bringing in Alexander if he stays healthy. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and a two-time Second-Team All-Pro. In 2020 and 2022, Alexander's quarterback rating allowed was 67.4 and 63.7, respectively. He has also been a relatively good tackler, too.
The part that might work in a team's favor is that the cornerback is still just 28. If he can manage to avoid injury, he should be quite good for at least two more seasons. This might be all the Seahawks need from him.
Assuming that the Seahawks re-sign Woolen in free agency next offseason, and assuming Alexander is signed and stays healthy, Seattle's trio of cornerbacks would rank among the best in the league.
As Seattle brought back Jobe, the Seahawks have a security blanket should something happen to Alexander. He would augment the overall defense and potentially give Seattle two shutdown corners on the outside.
Of course, the plan might also be for Witherspoon to play more outside beginning in 2025. Rookie safety Nick Emmanwori can play in the slot and would be great playing near the line of scrimmage. Maybe Alexander would be an unnecessary piece. But signing him is worth thinking about.
