The Seattle Seahawks are a franchise with a history of elite cornerback play, and the corner who’s currently carrying the torch is Devon Witherspoon. Seattle selected Witherspoon in the first round of the 2023 Draft, with the fifth-overall pick, and it didn’t take long for the corner to establish himself as an elite defensive back in the league.
Now, ahead of his third season, a massive contract extension seems inevitable for Witherspoon. Thanks to some recent NFL news, the Seahawks got an idea of how much it will cost for them to secure their star corner long term. On Tuesday, the New York Jets signed All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner to a four-year extension worth $120.4 million. While atleast a year away, Witherspoon will be looking to secure a contract in that range when it’s time.
Sauce Gardner contract gives Seahawks an outline for inevitable Devon Witherspoon extension
Like Gardner, Witherspoon started his career with two straight Pro Bowl seasons. Playing in 31 games, the Seattle corner recorded 177 tackles, 14 for a loss, four sacks, two forced fumbles, 25 pass deflections, and one interception— which he returned for a 97-yard score. Witherspoon is a physical cover corner that has proven to be worth his top-five selection, and Seattle will soon have to give him a contract that shows that.
The corner won’t be eligible for an extension until next offseason, and it would make sense for the franchise to immediately extend him. The longer the Seahawks wait, the more expensive the deal could get, as other corners will continue to reset the market like Gardner just did.

Additionally, Witherspoon isn’t the only corner Seattle may be paying. Riq Woolen, who was drafted in 2022 and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie after leading the league with six interceptions, is also looking for a new deal as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. While his play has dipped some since his stellar rookie season, he’s still a solid starter, and he made it clear on social media he’s awaiting his payday after seeing Gardner get his extension.
