Seahawks fans should warn the Browns about this risky signing

The reasons are not wise for Cleveland.

Cleveland Browns v Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks and Cleveland Browns have had some of the same issues over the last few years. That includes poor offensive line play. Injuries have been part of the problem, but so has simple inefficiency. Seattle hopefully addressed part of their concern this offseason; Cleveland hasn't.

Some of the more critical moves Seattle made were in what they didn't do. The team chose not to re-sign left guard Laken Tomlinson, and they made the same decision with backup tackle George Fant. There could be a chance the Browns are interested in signing Fant, but they shouldn't be.

This, at least, is based on a pitched idea from Bleacher Report's Moe Moton in an article about one move that every NFL team still needs to make. Cleveland needs offensive line help, especially if injuries hit hard again, so they should sign Fant. Only, they shouldn't.

Browns should pass on former Seahawks offensive lineman George Fant

Fant has a long history of starting in the NFL, but he will be 33 when the 2025 season begins and has a recent injury history. In 2022, he appeared in eight games. Seattle signed him last offseason to fill in in case right tackle Abraham Lucas was not healthy enough to start the 2024 season.

Lucas wasn't, but Fant lasted less than one game before he got hurt. He appeared in only two games last year for the Seahawks. Fant was supposed to be a safety valve, but more often than not, Seattle had to find a replacement for him.

Moton writes, "(Cleveland's) top two offensive tackles have an extensive recent injury history, so they need reliable depth at that position."

But Fant is not reliable depth. He proved that with the Seahawks last season. When Seattle needed him most, he wasn't available.

Of course, the Browns can do whatever they want. They aren't exactly the best-run organization in the NFL. They are one of the worst. Signing Fant would be just the kind of move they would make.

The offensive lineman is not a bad guy, and he has shown a willingness to adjust to whatever a team needs. Seattle signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2016 after he had played tight end in college. The Seahawks made him into a left tackle, and Fant got a lot of starts early in his career.

When he has played, he hasn't been terrible, but reaching the age of 30 and then struggling through injury-riddled seasons is not good for a team thinking of signing him. Cleveland should stay away.
