The offseason does not mean we stop talking about football, nor does it mean players stop talking about division rivals. Such is the case for Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon. A case can certainly be made that the two-time Pro Bowl defensive back is arguably Seattle’s best defender, and just like another former Seahawks cornerback, Witherspoon certainly isn’t afraid to talk a big game… even when it’s against other talented receivers in the NFC West.
Witherspoon, and fellow 2023 NFL draft classmate Jaxon Smith-Njigba, were speaking with Pro Football Focus’ Mike Florio and Chris Simms prior to Super Bowl LIX. Witherspoon certainly did not hold back on what he had to say about Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
While I’m sure Jaxon Smith-Njigba wasn’t thrilled about Witherspoon discussing his former Buckeye teammate like this, Witherspoon did offer plenty of praise to another former Ohio State receiver in Garrett Wilson.
However, perhaps Witherspoon does have a point to make. In his only two career games against the Seahawks thus far, “Maserati Marv” has looked anything but. He hauled in only seven of 14 passes tossed his way for 95 total yards and no scores. Not pedestrian, but certainly not super star caliber outings to torch Seattle.
I am sure, like the tweet above suggests, Harrison Jr. heard those words and will certainly be eager to put Witherspoon’s comments to the test. However, I am equally sure Witherspoon won’t waste any time this offseason working to cash the checks his mouth wrote on the field the next time these teams square off.
