The Seattle Seahawks are not settled even if the first wave of free agency and the draft are now gone. According to ESPN insiders Jeremy Fowler and Brady Henderson, the Seahawks are having discussions with free agent cornerback Shaquill Griffin, well-known among Seattle fans, on a potential reunion.
A third-round pick by the Seahawks in 2017, Griffin played his first four NFL seasons in Seattle, until 2020. Since then, he has played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, and Minnesota Vikings.
Last year for the Vikings , he played 572 defensive snaps (50.35%), starting three games but being a frequent option on Brian Flores' depth chart. However, Minnesota decided not to retain him. Griffin was solid, allowing a 73.8 passer rating when targeted.
The cornerback is 29 years old and would arrive to address a major roster need for the Seahawks. Right now, Devon Witherspoon is projected to start at nickel, and the boundary corners would be Josh Jobe (a free agent addition from last year) and 2022 fifth-round pick Riq Woolen.
The Seahawks didn't attack the cornerback position in the draft. The only defensive back selected was safety Nick Emmanwori early in the second round.
Griffin's best season came for the Seahawks back in 2019, his third year in the NFL, when he made the Pro Bowl. After his rookie deal expired, the cornerback signed a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency, but was released after two seasons. With the Vikings, he had two interceptions and six passes defended.
If the Seahawks actually get Shaquill Griffin back, it would be a different experience for the defender. Even though John Schneider is still the general manager, he would play for a new defensive playcaller with head coach Mike Macdonald. Defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Karl Scott has been with Seattle since 2022.
