Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald has two new players to work with as training camp gets underway.
NFL teams will be busy over the next few weeks tinkering with their rosters during the heat of training camp.
The Seattle Seahawks are no exception.
Seattle announced two new additions on Monday, signing rookie cornerback Kam Alexander and nose tackle Justin Rogers.
Rookie cornerback Zy Alexander, an undrafted free agent from LSU, was waived with a non-football injury designation in a corresponding move.
Rookies reported to training camp on July 15, while veterans reported on Tuesday.
Who are the Seahawks Newest’ Additions?
Kam Alexander participated in Seattle’s rookie minicamp and also spent time with the Atlanta Falcons since going undrafted out of Oregon.
The 5-foot-11 Alexander played sparingly in his one season with the Big Ten Conference champions, recording four tackles and an interception in 11 games (22 snaps). He transferred there from UTSA, where in 2023 he was All-AAC First Team and Defensive MVP of the Frisco Bowl, with one interception, one sack and three passes defended against Marshall. Prior to that, he spent four seasons with Sam Houston.
He essentially replaces Zy Alexander, who had been sidelined to start training camp. The team has not disclosed the exact nature of his injury.
The 6-3, 338-pound Rogers was on the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad last season and later made the Dallas Cowboys’ 53-man roster, though he did not appear in a game. Rogers began his collegiate career at Kentucky before transferring within the SEC to Auburn, where as a senior he had 17 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one sack in 13 games. He was drafted in the seventh round (244th overall) by Dallas in 2023.
Rogers was regarded as a decent run-stuffer coming out of college, with NFL.com describing him as a “what you see is what you get” nose tackle.
“Rogers is a drain-clogging nose capable of muddying the A-gaps for teams looking for depth and help slowing the run,” read a pre-draft scouting report.
What Are Their Chances of Making the Roster?
This is a busy time for NFL front offices, and the Seahawks clearly thought enough of Alexander and Rogers to bring them aboard for camp. That said, both players face an uphill battle to make the team in Week 1.
If nothing else, the next few weeks will serve as a valuable opportunity for Alexander and Rogers to prove themselves as the transaction wire keeps churning throughout the summer.
The Seahawks went 10-7 but missed the NFC playoffs in 2024, their first season under coach Mike Macdonald.
