Former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley has shared his thoughts on his old team letting go of quarterback Daniel Jones.
The Giants made the decision to release Jones on Friday after he asked Giants president John Mara for his release. With Jones joining Barkley as another recent departure, the team is moving forward into a new phase.
Barkley spoke to reporters after the news of Jones being released broke. Now with the Philadelphia Eagles, Barkley said his friendship with Jones has stayed strong since his move to Philly, which has worked out well for him so far.
He expressed hope that Jones could find a fresh start and similar success elsewhere.
“It sucks to see how it all went down,” Barkley said. “I’ve got nothing but great things to say about him. It didn’t work for me over there, and I’m doing well over here. Hopefully, he can find the same kinda fresh start and success.”
Jones and Barkley were two of the biggest stars for the Giants before Barkley moved to the Eagles last offseason. The two had a standout year together in 2022, when the Giants made the playoffs for the first time in a long time with a 9-7 record.
After signing a big contract following the 2022 season, Jones has struggled. In the 2023 season, Jones only threw for 909 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions in 6 injury-filled games.
Before being released this season, Jones had 2,070 passing yards, 8 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions on the 2-8 Giants. While it’s still unclear which teams might be interested in him, there are already rumors about where he could go next.
