Rex Ryan offers surprising comment on the Houston Texans after they proved him wrong in the NFL playoffs

The Houston Texans were widely picked by the national media to lose to the Los Angeles Chargers during the NFL’s opening game of the playoffs.

They went 4-4 in the final eight games of their season and looked worryingly out of place against fellow AFC rivals the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens in that stretch.

Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud threw for 282 yards and one touchdown on Saturday evening as they reminded everyone in the league why they won the AFC South by beating the Chargers 32-12.

Running back Joe Mixon compared Stroud to Joe Burrow who he used to play with in Cincinnati, for his ability to make unscripted plays.

They now face a nervy wait to see whether they will be hosting a divisional round game or travelling to one of their AFC rivals, with the latter being the most likely scenario.

Stroud’s early season struggles for the Texans were blamed on offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik for failing to scheme him effectively and put points on the board, but they have since recovered well.

Rex Ryan apologises to the Houston Texans for refusing to believe in them

The Texans were one of the least fancied teams to progress to the divisional round throughout the week before wildcard weekend.

They’ve booked their ticket to the divisional round for the second consecutive season, after beating the Cleveland Browns in a 45-14 blowout win last January.

They should be able to challenge anyone in the conference if they play like they did yesterday when their defense managed to intercept Justin Herbert four times – more than he was picked off in 17 regular season games.

Speaking on ESPN, New York Jets head coaching candidate Rex Ryan issued an apology to the Texans after they managed to win with relative ease.

“Who had a worse day? Me, or Justin Herbert? It’s probably right there but you’ve got to tip your hat to them because that team played their absolute a***s off,” he said.

“If you guys were going to play like that, I would’ve taken you to win the Super Bowl. I’m seeing the [before the] game, going up into it 1-5 against playoff teams. I’m seeing all that and, I’m sorry Houston. I’m not picking you next week either, or maybe I will?”

Why the Houston Texans could make the Super Bowl playoffs

The Texans have a dynamic and fast offense which stretched its legs against the Chargers on Saturday evening.

That same defense they faced was the number one overall unit for much of the season, and even without the injured Tank Dell, they were able to do a lot of damage.

Their secondary spearheaded by the stud cornerback Derek Stingley Jr proved it can wreak havoc with four key interceptions too.

Finally, their pass rush with both Will Anderson Jr and Danielle Hunter could prove to be a nuisance for any of the remaining sides.

It could boil down to Stroud’s abilities through the air and whether he can guide them by himself to the championship game for the first time in their history.
