REPORT: The Denver Broncos’ 1-Time Pro Bowler Isn’t Ruling out Skipping Training Camp

Courtland Sutton has two years left on his four-year, $60 million contract extension he signed with the Denver Broncos in 2021 and has $2 million guaranteed and $26.5 million remaining. Sutton wants a $2 or $3 million raise in order to earn in the $15-$16 million range.

He expressed his displeasure by holding out of voluntary workouts and voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) but attended mandatory minicamp.

Courtland Sutton attended mandatory minicamp because he didn’t want to be fined $101,000 and the Broncos already knew that he was displeased with his current contract.

“It was something that was conversed about,” Sutton said. “My team and I had conversations about it. Missing OTAs wasn’t easy for me. I love ball, I love this game. I love the comradery that it brings with my teammates. … So it was definitely something that was considered. I wasn’t – I’m not going to say I wasn’t a fan [of missing OTAs] – but obviously I’m here, you know? So that’s the biggest thing. I wanted to make sure that it was known that, yeah, I was upset about how the contract went about, how the conversation went about, how the stalemate has persisted, but I also want it to be known that I love ball. I love the guys.”

He is hopeful a deal gets done during their month-and-a-half break.

The Broncos have a month and a half off before training camp begins. Sutton hopes they can get a deal done before training camp.

“We’ll see what happens. We’ve got a month for things to get situated,” Sutton said of getting a deal before training camp. “Hopefully things get situated because you know … this is where I want to be. This is home. This is where I want to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. This is the place where I want to be able to retire. This is the place where I want to be in the Broncos’ Ring of Honor.”

He doesn’t rule out a training camp holdout.

“You know we’ll see, we’ll see what happens,” Sutton said when asked if he’ll show up for training camp if his contract negotiations remain at a stalemate. “Got a month to be able to get things situated, hopefully things get situated because, you know, as you all have heard and I will continue to say this, this is where I want to be. This is home.”
