Report: Dallas Cowboys interested in reunion with Amari Cooper

According to Nick Harris of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Dallas Cowboys are interested in reuniting with wide receiver Amari Cooper. Nothing appears to be imminent, nor is Cooper’s potential desire to head back to Dallas known. But at least from the Cowboys’ end, adding the former Pro Bowler ahead of the 2025 season appears to be an option.

“There is building team interest in bringing free agent Amari Cooper back for a reunion in Dallas, according to a Star-Telegram team source,” Harris said. “Team interest is one thing, but the appeal will have to be reciprocated by Cooper if the two sides do, in fact, connect over a second stint with the Cowboys.”

Dallas made a splash for trading Cooper back in 2018, giving the then-Oakland Raiders a first-round pick for the receiver. A contract extension was worked out during 2020 too but the relationship between them ended following the 2021 season. The Cowboys sent Cooper to Cleveland in exchange for a fifth-rounder.

Cooper caught 292 passes with Dallas, going for 3,893 yards and 27 touchdowns. He made up one of the best one-two duos in the entire NFL once CeeDee Lamb was drafted. If Cooper were to return, the roles might be reversed with Lamb now being the No. 1 guy.

Last season saw Cooper play for Cleveland and Buffalo, totalling 44 receptions for 547 yards and four touchdowns. All of those are career low stats and you know one of the league’s best guys is looking for a bounceback.

Dallas entered and left the 2025 NFL Draft without a viable No. 2 wide receiver. Mock drafts heavily linked the Cowboys to players in the first round, specifically Tetairoa McMillan and Matthew Golden. McMillan was off the board at No. 12 and despite Golden being available, Alabama guard Tyler Booker got the call instead.

They went on to not take a wide receiver through all seven rounds, leaving big-time questions about the position. Owner/general manager Jerry Jones did say there is confidence in a few guys already in-house. Specifically, Jonathan Mingo.

“Jerry Jones said the Cowboys could look at add to the wide receiver room with a veteran,” ESPN’s Todd Archer said via X on Saturday. “He also mentioned Jonathan Mingo, who was acquired with a fourth-round pick last year, as a player they can make a jump in 2025.”
