Good morning, Broncos Country!
Based on the lack of moves by the Denver Broncos the last few weeks, you get the sense they’re done with free agency.
Then Broncos insider Mike Klis has a story this week where he says a free-agent wide receiver could still be in play for Denver. Klis starts out the piece by highlighting the nominal interest in Cooper Kupp and Stefon Diggs.
Klis goes on to add that their initial inquiries would suggest they are considering adding a receiver to their current group that consists of veteran No. 1 Courtland Sutton and the latest Three Amigos version of Marvin Mims Jr., Devaughn Vele, and Troy Franklin. Klis then mentions two players, Keenan Allen and Elijah Moore.
Allen had 70 catches and 7 touchdowns last season for a terrible Chicago Bears offense and a rookie quarterback in Caleb Williams, who struggled most of the year. Klis notes that Allen is a month from turning 33, but he still put up those numbers in a woeful offense. Adding a veteran like Allen to this receiver group could make sense. He’s reliable, catches everything, and is great in key situations where he could really help Bo Nix and this offense.
Obviously, price is the key in this situation, but Allen is an intriguing vet receiver for Denver.
Moore has struggled since his rookie season and doesn’t really bring anything the Broncos don’t already have.
Klis then throws in a third name, Tyler Lockett, who is also intriguing. As Klis notes, Lockett is a flat winner who made numerous clutch catches in his 10 years with the Seattle Seahawks. What Sean Payton and his offensive coaches will need to figure out is whether his drop in production last season was due to Lockett’s age — he turns 33 in September — or it was due to an offense that saw the coordinator fired.
Whether Payton and the Broncos add a veteran receiver makes sense. It not only adds another experienced player to the position group who would help the young wideouts but also helps Sutton and Nix in the process.
Allen is the most intriguing of the bunch, and to see him in a Broncos uniform would take some getting used to. But his addition could help the Denver offense.
We’ll see if Payton and the Broncos make this sort of move.
