Having played for the Kansas City Chiefs over the last few years seems to be a golden ticket to remain on NFL rosters indefinitely. Everybody wants some of Andy Reid and Brett Veach's secret sauce, and for good reason. The Chiefs consistently field one of the best, deepest rosters in the NFL, which means they often have to say goodbye to players who are absolutely still capable of contributing on lesser teams.
We are seeing the umpteenth example of this phenomenon heading into Week 13, as the playoff-hopeful Seattle Seahawks just added a former Chief with two Super Bowl rings to their practice squad.
Cornell Powell, a wide receiver and special teams contributor, signed with Seattle on Tuesday.
It will probably only be the diehard Chiefs fans who remember Powell at this point, but he was a 2021 fifth-round pick who spent three years with the organization — mostly on the practice squad. Three years in a row he was waived at the end of training camp and then signed onto the practice squad.
He was released entirely on November 19, and it took less than 10 days for him to find a new home.
Powell only appeared in three games for the Chiefs (all as a rookie in 2021), and in that time only saw the field for three offensive snaps (plus 28 on special teams). With this lack of opportunity, Chiefs fans only ever had the preseason to see his potential — and he did eventually show flashes there.
The 2024 preseason was easily the best of his career, catching 6 passes for 104 yards and 2 touchdowns, building off his 6-63-1 line in 2023.
Will Powell make his way onto the active roster for the Seahawks? Probably not, and his chances of making an impact on the field are even lower. But as a wide receiver with three years learning in one of the best offenses in the NFL, it's not hard to see why the Seahawks decided it's worth a shot.
