Ranking most important Bears on 2025 roster: Number 21 is hard-hitting safety

Kevin Byard is one of the least talked-about Chicago Bears entering the 2025 season.

This is even though he is a clear starter who could very well play every defensive snap this season. He’s unquestionably among the team’s top 22 players, but his impact may not be significant enough for the team to rely on him heavily.

Ranking the Most Important Bears on the 2025 Roster: Number 21 — Kevin Byard

Byard enjoyed a strong career with the Tennessee Titans, earning two All-Pro selections over seven solid seasons and remaining a fan favorite there. However, his play started to decline in 2023, prompting Tennessee to trade him to Philadelphia, where he struggled as the Eagles sputtered late in the season.

So when the Bears signed Byard, there was plenty of uncertainty. He looked old and washed up during his stint in Philadelphia, but he has always possessed the mental acuity and instincts to age gracefully in the NFL. The Bears took the risk and are not disappointed.

Byard’s 2024 season could best be described as average. It didn’t help that his safety partner missed most of the year, but even so, Byard produced few impact plays. Still, he was far from a liability, and the Bears feel comfortable bringing him back as a starter for another season.

Byard will turn 32 this year, and the drop-off could come at any time. Behind him, Elijah Hicks remains the most trusted backup. Hicks has played significant snaps over the past few seasons due to injuries and enters his fourth year with the team

Ultimately, even if Byard offers minimal impact or misses time, it’s hard to see it drastically changing the Bears’ fortunes. That’s why a former All-Pro and clear-cut starter lands just 21st on this list.
