Rams’ Young Big-Bodied Playmaker Lands on NFL Preseason Watchlist

The Los Angeles Rams were among the many teams to select tight ends in the 2025 draft, and their second-round pick, Terrance Ferguson, could make a significant impact as a rookie.

How the Next Five Games Will Make or Break Rams' Season

Ferguson, listed at 6-foot-6, finished his career at Oregon with 134 receptions for 1,537 yards and 16 touchdowns. The Rams acquired the pick used to select Ferguson in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons.

Now that they have him, he could quickly climb the depth chart.

“Ferguson is not a strong blocker right now, but he has the ball skills and size (6-5, 247) to become a nuisance for defenses in the short-to-intermediate passing game, as long as his groin injury doesn’t linger,” NFL.com’s Dan Parr wrote on August 7. “That’s the type of player Matthew Stafford was missing for much of last season, when the Rams ranked dead last in receiving yards by tight ends.”

“Productive pass catcher with good size but an alarming lack of tenacity and fire when it’s time to run block. Ferguson saw adequate short-catch volume but was rarely asked to venture beyond the front yard as a route-runner. He has not shown enough technique or toughness to neutralize an NFL edge defender at the point of attack,” NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote before the draft.

“He can hit targets as a move blocker. Ferguson could improve in that area with additional coaching, but he might need to find the grit needed to compete against NFL tough guys as a run blocker to realize his full potential.”

The Rams may not ask Ferguson to block too often, though.

Rams Built to Maximize Terrance Ferguson

Parr pointed to the Rams’ tight-end-laden roster now that Ferguson is in the mix and what it could mean for the offense.

“Are you fired up for some 12 personnel looks or what?!” Parr wrote. “With Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson and Davis Allen also on the roster, Sean McVay has the personnel to hit defenses with a good share of two-TE sets, something the coach seems excited about.”

Ferguson could eventually wrestle the Rams’ top tight end spot away from Higbee.

Higbee offers a more traditional (i.e., physical) presence, which should mesh well with Ferguson’s dynamic ability as a playmaker, assuming both are healthy.

Terrance Ferguson Down Depth Chart

Ferguson has some ground to make up if he wants to see the field as projected thanks at least partly to the time that he has missed. The Rams listed Ferguson as their fourth tight end on their initial unofficial depth chart.

“Tyler Higbee, Davis Allen, and Colby Parkinson were all ranked ahead of the Rams’ first selection of the 2025 NFL Draft. This isn’t surprising considering Allen and Parkinson had themselves an incredible camp with Allen making incredible catches while Parkinson was a force in open space,” Los Angeles Rams on SI’s Brock Vierra wrote on August 7.

“Ferguson is also dealing with a slight injury issue that has sidelined him. Nothing concerning, but it plays into why he’s the TE4.”

The sooner Ferguson is back on the field for the Rams, the better.
