When the Los Angeles Rams took the field last season, few expected an undrafted rookie to play a pivotal role on defense. Yet, linebacker Omar Speights defied the odds. Now, as he enters his second year, Speights finds himself on Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) All-Breakout Team for 2025, a testament to both his remarkable rise and opportunity ahead.
From Undrafted to Unshakeable: Omar Speights Poised for a Breakout Year with the Rams
For a franchise transitioning toward a younger core on defense, Speights symbolizes everything the Rams are trying to build. The former LSU standout quietly became one of the most efficient rookie linebackers in the league, becoming one of six rookie LBs to exceed 500 snaps. Even more impressive, his 5.1% missed tackle rate was the third-lowest among qualified linebackers in 2024.
There is still a lot to improve on, as Speights finished with a 66.8 overall grade by PFF (77th/189), but there’s a lot to like watching his tape from last season.
Throughout last season, he showcased rare poise and play recognition for a rookie. Whether filling run gaps, covering tight ends over the middle, or cleaning up plans with sure-fire tackling, he provided a steady presence in the middle of the Rams’ defense. His efforts helped the Rams with unproven talent at linebacker, ultimately propelling them to the NFC Divisional Round. That said, Speights joins Indianapolis Colts linebacker Jaylon Carlies as the only two LBs to make PFF’s list.
But his success didn’t happen overnight. After practices, Speights was often found watching film at his locker, with his nose “buried in a tablet.”
He also noted that, along with watching film, he likes to analyze his potential matchups.
“For me, it’s really once I get to that point of just being comfortable (with the opposing offense) because then at that point, it’s kind of like, I just know when it’s that time, I can cut it loose.”
“I’ve seen a guy that’s consistently put in the work,” head coach Sean McVay said regarding Speights. “He’s got a routine and a rhythm that he has established where he’s doing extra work, taking care of his body, he’s got film, very conscientious, and this guy is a pro.”
A Fan Favorite in the Making

GettyLos Angeles Rams’ linebacker Omar Speights is a fan favorite in the making.
Speights is the kind of player fans rally around. He’s gritty, underrated, and easy to root for. In an era where so much of the attention gravitates towards offensive stars, Speights brings a tough presence that has been lacking in the linebacker department for quite some time.
Although the Rams added linebacker Nate Landman from the Atlanta Falcons in free agency and fifth-round pick Chris Paul Jr., Speights still has a great chance to anchor down a starting linebacker spot for the foreseeable future. His inclusion on PFF’s All-Breakout Team isn’t just a projection; it’s a recognition of the work he’s already accomplished.
