Rams Snag 6’5″, 307 lb Tackle After Failed Meeting with NFC Rival

The Los Angeles Rams have reached an agreement on a deal with former longtime Arizona Cardinals offensive tackle DJ Humphries, who spent the end of last season with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Humphries, 31, earned Pro Bowl honors in 2021 and provides another depth piece for the Rams’ tackle position after the team signed OT David Quessenberry to a one-year deal on May 29th. Los Angeles landed the veteran lineman after contract discussions with the San Francisco 49ers fell through in late April.

Humphries was supposed to sign with the 49ers in late April but the deal was never finalized.

What DJ Humphries Brings to the Table

Humphries is a former first-round pick out of Florida by the Cardinals back in the 2015 NFL Draft. He is on the older end but will be a good security option if Rob Havenstein or Alaric Jackson go down next season, due to having experience at both right and left tackle throughout his career.

Although he didn’t play much with the Chiefs last season due to a hamstring injury, the 6’5″, 307-pound tackle had a good impression with the Chiefs squad.

“[I] love the person — [and] love his energy,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy told reporters back in December. “It’s a contagious, infectious personality that he has — with a lot of confidence. But he has to learn the lingo and how we do things. He’s been able to do that [in] the last couple of weeks.”

Just as he had to learn the Chiefs’ system, Humphries will now do the same in Los Angeles.

“He’s been doing a really good job in practice of being able to show us [things with] the opportunities he’s getting,” Nagy added.

Signing Humphries isn’t a blockbuster move, but it appears the Rams are adding him for more than his play on the field.

Humphries, unfortunately, suffered a torn ACL with the Cardinals before the hamstring injury with the Chiefs, which prompted the Cardinals to release him. Despite this, he was still motivated to bounce back.

“Man, it’s been interesting,” Humphries said. “It’s been, how you say, you find out stuff about yourself when you go through stuff like this. I knew I was a tough guy already but having to go through those things and getting those, ‘Man, you had such a great career. What a run!’ Those texts were really trying for me. It was like, damn, people are just assuming it’s over because I’m hurt. That was probably the toughest part.” This was him talking about the ACL injury before the hamstring injury that sidelined him with the Chiefs last season.

Now, he’ll get another chance at redemption with the Rams.
