Rams’ Sean McVay Ranked Below Only One Head Coach In 2025 Rankings, How He Could Pass Him

Many would agree that Sean McVay is the face of the Los Angeles Rams. A spirited debate could be had about whether there are other faces of the team, but most would agree that without him, the Rams would have had a monumentally different outlook in the last eight years.

It appears the head coach is much more than just a locally celebrated name as well, as the coach has recently received a ringing endorsement from an NFL analyst.

Writing in a CBS Sports ranking of all 32 head coaches, analyst Cody Benjamin ranked McVay above every other head coach except one, placing him second.

“If you were starting a brand-new franchise, you’d be hard-pressed to hire anyone else. McVay is battle-tested thanks to six different playoff runs in eight years, two of which ended in the Super Bowl,” Benjamin wrote.

“He’s also energetic enough to cultivate long-term growth; look no further than how quickly the Rams’ remade young defense found its footing. Give McVay, who remains a near-unmatched motivator, a competent and/or reasonably healthy quarterback, and you’re locked in for a solid January fight,” he added.

Of course, that leaves the question of who he viewed as a better choice than McVay. Turns out, the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, Andy Reid, received the nod. McVay being ranked second out of 32 head coaches is impressive, but how can McVay pull himself past the offensive Bill Belichick of our time?

Matthew Stafford’s Exit Might Be Sean McVay’s Only Way To Tackle Andy Reid

The Chiefs’ head coach is a logical choice to put on top. He’s been to the Super Bowl more than any active head coach and has done it with multiple quarterbacks.

McVay has been to the Super Bowl with different quarterbacks as well, having won one ring already.

However, Reid still holds one flex over McVay. Reid can say he coached up a quarterback from his first breaths in the NFL into a multi-time Super Bowl champion.

Meanwhile, McVay still needs to coach up a rookie from scratch (Jared Goff was in his second season by the time McVay arrived). Plus, he needs to take that quarterback on a run similar to Patrick Mahomes.

For that to happen, Stafford would need to vacate. Of course, if McVay wins another with Stafford before all is said and done, it absolutely wouldn’t hurt his case.

However, in terms of getting past Reid, McVay needs to get on the championship treadmill with someone without previous experience that it would be undeniable to point at McVay as the reason for his success.

Simply put, even with everything he has accomplished, there is still at least one mountain left for McVay to climb.
