Rams front office saved fans from themselves by dodging this disastrous outcome

The passion of fans of the Los Angeles Rams burns bright in the night on some subjects. There was no match for the joy of fans celebrating the Super Bowl LVI victory. But passion has a darker version as well. That same level of passion found another home with relentless social media vitriol aimed at the Defensive Coordinator Raheem Morris. Even as the offense struggled to secure the football and score points, Morris was the inevitable scapegoat.

But passion also comes in the form of strong lobbying for the team to address a specific football position in free agency or the NFL Draft. After the defense was shredded twice in two games against the Philadelphia Eagles' RB Saquon Barkley, the Rams' need to upgrade the linebacker position was the undeniable desire of many fans.

And their top target was former nemesis, San Francisco 49ers LB Dre Greenlaw.

But free agents can get paid, and then fall to injury. And per the latest reports, that is exactly what happened to the Denver Broncos' star free agent acquisition. Reports suggest that Greenlaw is now injured while working out in the offseason. It's not even training camp, and the guy is already fighting back to get medically cleared to play football.

No, Dre Greenlaw's season is not over. He is projected to be recuperating for multiple weeks, but heal and be medically cleared to return during training camp. But it confirms that the oft-injured former 49ers linebacker is still... oft-injured. Greenlaw is a six-year NFL veteran. In 2021, he played three games. In 2024, he played two games. In the past four seasons, that is a significant amount of downtime.

It's also one of the primary reasons that he was not extended by a 49ers defense that needed consistency and continuity.

It was the San Francisco 49ers' willingness to allow Dre Greenlaw to start against the Rams in 2024 that led to the hilarious reaction of then-starting LB De'Vondre Campbell quitting the team in the middle of the game and leaving the team in the lurch. Greenlaw played 30 defensive snaps and recorded eight tackles in the game. He would only play in four more defensive snaps for the rest of the season.

Perhaps it was that electrifying, if short, performance of Greenlaw that gave Rams fans the idea that he would make the ideal addition to the roster in 2025. But no player adds anything to a team if they are on IR. And there simply are not enough contract clauses in the world to prevent that from happening. Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it.

The Denver Broncos' fans are learning the wisdom of that old adage. And thanks to the vigilance and care extended by the Los Angeles Rams front office, Rams fans needn't worry about that. For now, that is.

As always, thanks for reading.
