The Los Angeles Rams are not only benefiting from the addition of savvy and seasoned veterans in their various position groups. Rather, the intensity of competition in OTAs, minicamp, and the soon-to-arrive training camp rises as well. That's new news, as it falls right in line with the adage Iron sharpens iron. And the Rams football team, in its quest to acquire the best veterans since hiring HC Sean McVay in 2017, has adopted that principle as a core tactic for restocking the Rams roster.
When the Rams invested in signing NT Poona Ford, the team was not just adding a power run stuffer to the defensive front. The team has added a magnificent mentor to all of the young defensive linemen who are eager to simulate Ford's success. And beyond that, the entire interior offensive line has to face Ford in drills throughout training camp. In summary, Poona Ford's arrival creates a much larger sphere of influence for the team than you may realize.
And the same can be said of every veteran signed to the team for the 2025 NFL season.
But as we've recognized the willingness of the Rams front office to expand the roster to include atypical skills, we may have glossed over how different styles of players on the Rams roster benefit the readiness of the team for the upcoming season. What do I mean? Let's focus on how a veteran wide receiver like Davante Adams helps the overall offense get better.
Iron sharpens iron
Throughout OTAs, the Los Angeles Rams have been impressed by several outstanding performances from unexpected players. But some players are simply delivering to expectations. One player who has delivered throughout every opportunity is Davante Adams.
That point was driven home by defensive back Cobie Durant as he shared the willingness of Adams to share what he sees, and allows Durant to pick up instant feedback from a seasoned veteran throughout OTAs, minicamp, and training camp. And as those drills start to stack up over time, the quality and preparedness of defensive backs rise as well.
He shares the impact that Davante Adams has made on his performance already at the 4:01 minute mark in the embedded video (below).
That point should not be lost in the shuffle. The willingness of Adams to elevate Cobie Durant's performance is a direct benefit. But imagine all of the younger cornerbacks who are also learning from the mentorship and tutelage of Cobie Durant.
Even as NFL rumors continue to swirl around the belief that the LA Rams will eventually ante up to pry veteran DB Jalen Ramsey from the Miami Dolphins, the team continues to press on as though no reinforcements are due to arrive. With the players currently projected to play key roles in the secondary, the Rams are certainly counting heavily on Cobie Durant to show up in a big way this season.
Whether or not the Rams do acquire Ramsey this season is inconsequential. The secondary, and the defense as a whole, have to attack every opportunity to train and improve their football craft as though no reinforcements are riding over the hill. The interaction of DB Cobie Durant and WR Davante Adams is simply a microcosm of the positive impact that a veteran makes on this team.
The rising tide raises all boats. That is another adage that the Rams love to harness as well. It's working for Cobie Durant. In turn, it's having the desired effect on both the offense and the defense.
As always, thanks for reading.
