L.A. Rams’ rookie running back Blake Corum was expected to form a two-headed monster with Kyren Williams in 2024. Whatever expectations there were for the former Michigan star have long since gone out the window and the coaching staff is completely at fault. Williams fumbled twice on Sunday against the Eagles, but that’ll do nothing to hurt his standing as the RB1 in Hollywood.
The All-Pro has a glaring fumbling problem as he has four fumbles in his last four games alone, and eight total dating back to last season. His butterfingers are a major concern and should place him on the hot seat. Or at the very least, the Rams should think twice before giving him a sizable contract extension this offseason.
Williams’ ball-handling struggles and his noticeable regression from 2023 have only made the lack of Corum in the offensive all the more frustrating.
Through 11 appearances, the rookie has only 29 carries for 106 yards and zero touchdowns. The most carries he has received in a game to date was eight which came in the Week 2 blowout to the Cardinals. Since then, Corum has amassed at least five carries in two other games against the Packers and Patriots.
It goes without saying that his lack of usage is INEXCUSABLE, and Sean McVay and the offensive coaching staff must be held accountable. What is the point of spending a premium third-rounder on a player you barely use?
McVay’s refusal to increase Corum’s playing time is a failure in every sense. Again, the Rams coach and his staff must be held to a higher standard for severely underutilizing an accomplished back fresh off a national championship with the Wolverines. While it can be argued that Corum has a limited sample size and hasn’t shown enough in his extremely limited opportunities, what else can he do with a coaching staff allergic to giving him additional touches?
I’m not about to say that Corum deserves the bulk of the carries moving forward with Williams struggling. However, he deserves at least something more than the little he’s gotten through his first year in LA. Nothing will change anytime soon while the Rams make what will likely end up being an ill-fated playoff push and it’s a complete waste.
