In the 2023 NFL draft, the Las Vegas Raiders used their first-round pick (No. 7 overall) on former Texas A&M and Texas Tech defensive end Tyree Wilson, hoping that he and Maxx Crosby could form a dynamic duo that would terrorize opposing offensive coordinators and quarterbacks.
However, through two seasons, Wilson hasn't lived up to the expectations of a first-round selection, appearing in 33 games and recording just 56 tackles (eight for a loss), 18 quarterback hits, eight sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
In 2024, he played 50% of Las Vegas' defensive snaps, and Pro Football Focus gave him a 66.7 overall grade, ranking him 72nd out of 211 qualified edge rushers. He also received a 72.4 run-defense grade (29th) and a 57.2 pass-rush grade (130th).
This season is crucial for Wilson, as he really has to prove that he's the type of player who's worth a second contract, as the Raiders will have to decide whether or not they want to pick up his fifth-year option next offseason.
"Man, this is the biggest year," Wilson said (via Raiders Wire's Levi Damien). "I feel like it's no pressure, it's just feel like I got my feet under me. My teammates are counting on me and the team's counting on me. So, yeah, that's a big year."
In 2025, Wilson is more focused on doing anything he can to help the team.
"He's been trying some new things and really being intentional about his work as well," Raiders defensive lineman Adam Butler said about Wilson. "So, I hope everything works out for him. As long as he keeps working, I believe he'll surprise you."
"Just being versatile," Wilson added. "Last year you saw me outside, inside and just really try to make my game more efficient inside, working more edge moves, counter moves, and not just be a power guy, which I always had in my bag."
If Wilson can't capitalize on his opportunities this year, not only will the Raiders not pick up his option next offseason, but they may not keep him on the roster for a fourth season.
